What you would seeLo que verías
A circular porcelain dish viewed from directly above against a soft gray gradient background, slightly raised to show its shallow depth and thin rim. The entire well is densely painted in cobalt blue on a white glaze. At the center, a mythical shishi or karajishi lion with a sturdy spotted body, curly spiral mane, wavy tail and wide-eyed frontal gaze strides forward, one paw resting on a small tasseled textile ball known as a temari. Surrounding it are large peony branches with dark veined leaves, fully opened blossoms with layered petals rendered in wash and fine lines, and a closed bud on a curving stem. The empty ground between motifs is filled with a fine honeycomb or tortoiseshell diaper pattern in pale blue, giving the impression of delicate lace. A narrow geometric border of interlocking lines runs around the inner rim. Even, soft lighting reveals the glossy vitreous glaze, subtle variations in blue tone from the firing, and fluid brushwork with darker saturated areas and paler diluted washes that create volume. The dish appears to be a serving size, probably about 30 to 40 cm in diameter.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the shishi at the center and follow its gaze and the temari ball toward the surrounding peonies. Notice how the honeycomb background structures the surface and how the layering of blue washes models mane, fur and petals.

Curious detailDato curioso
In Kutani-type Hizen blue-and-white porcelain, the overall honeycomb infill is a hallmark technique that keeps the underglaze blue stable during firing while creating a rich tapestry-like surface covering the entire dish.

If you look closely, all that blue is under the glass, not on top. The cobalt blue was painted before firing and the transparent glaze sealed it, which gives it that deep yet glossy, almost wet shine. Notice the washes: where the brush loaded more pigment the blue turns nearly black, where it passed lightly it stays pale sky blue, and that is how volume was given to the curly mane and the petals. The pale blue honeycomb background required very steady control to avoid overloading the piece. The tonal variations are not flaws, they are traces of the kiln and the brush.

I like to see this plate as a night sky. The shishi lion in the center is like a fierce constellation, with its spiral mane looking like galaxies and its temari ball like a planet with tassels. Around it, the huge peonies open like nebulae and the honeycomb pattern covering everything recalls a grid of stars that brings order to chaos. Even the zigzag border looks like an orbit. It is a universe in blue and white where every shape floats yet everything is connected, as if myth and nature shared the same gravity.

This lion is not scary, it looks like it is playing! Its hair is all curly and fluffy, as if it curled it with rollers, and it is stepping on a ball with little tassels like the ones we use to play catch. The flowers are huge, bigger than its head, and there are leaves everywhere. If you look, behind everything there are light blue little turtle scales that make the plate look full of lace. I think the lion guards the flowers and does not let anyone step on them.
