Pinscreen AnimationAnimación en pantalla de agujas pinscreen

Animation made by photographing, frame by frame, a vertical board perforated with thousands of metal pins. Developed in Paris in the 1930s and continued later in Montreal, it flourished between 1930 and 1960. Pushing the pins and lighting them from the side creates lights, shadows and halftones like a living engraving. It is unmistakable for its vibrating grisaille, its dissolved contours, and figures that emerge from darkness and sink back into it.
Visual vocabularyVocabulario visual
Soft, spectral forms: faces, animals, landscapes, architecture and crowds reduced to masses of light. There is no drawn line or closed contour; edges are born from the contrast between protruding pins, in shadow, and sunken pins, which let the bright ground show through. The dominant palette is grayscale, deep black, warm white and powdery halftones. Motifs repeat by metamorphosing: a hill becomes a face, a blot opens like an eye. No added decorative ornament: the ornament is the granular vibration of thousands of points themselves.
Pictorial, frontal, single-frame composition inherited from engraving and painting. The figure usually emerges at the center or on a diagonal from a dark ground, with large breathing areas of black around it. There are no cuts within the scene: everything changes by gradual dissolution. Depth is suggested by lighter grays in front and silhouettes lost behind, without rigid perspective or detailed sets.
Texture and techniqueTextura y técnica
A perforated vertical plate holds thousands of black headless pins. Rollers, spoons, hands and objects push them from behind or in front; raking light casts their shadow and creates tone. The further they protrude, the darker they read. One area is altered, one frame is photographed, and the process repeats. The resulting texture is grainy, tactile and trembling, like charcoal, mezzotint and blurred photography at once.

Very few original frames circulate, the work is mostly grayscale, and the effect depends on animation and real relief, so image models rarely learn it. It offers something scarce today: slow metamorphosis, tactile shadow, and mystery without color or sharp detail.

Sharp black outlines and closed silhouettes; flat gray fills without grain; bright colors; glossy 3D pins seen at an angle like a toy; pushpin maps or office thumbtacks; clean vector shapes; each pin drawn as a perfect identical dot; horror imagery just because it is dark.
