This is a terracotta sculpture by Massimiliano Soldani (Italian, 1656–1740), active in Florence around 1700, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts the myth of Apollo, god of the sun and the arts, and the nymph Daphne, who, pursued by Apollo, prayed to her father the river god Peneus and was transformed into a laurel tree at the moment he touched her. The work is based on the large-scale marble by Gian Lorenzo Bernini made in 1622–25 in Rome, a key example of Baroque concerns with active composition, fleeting moments, and physical transformation. Soldani was known for small-scale bronzes and terracottas after celebrated classical and Baroque models.

The group rises in a spiral as if turning around an invisible axis, caught right at the moment of change between the human and the vegetal. Daphne arches her torso back and lifts her arms to the sky with her mouth half open, while her feet become bark. The three winged putti climbing and holding the garland remind me of tiny orbits around two colliding stars.

It looks like real magic! Daphne is about to become a tree and little leaves are already sprouting from her head and hands, and her feet are roots stuck to the trunk with bark. Apollo hugs her but he is too late and his face says oh no! I love the three little angels with wings, two climbing the tree and one down below with a little crown of leaves. Everything spins as if they were dancing really fast and she wants to escape by flying into the sky.
