What you would seeLo que verías

The piece fills almost the entire width of the image, photographed from the front and slightly above against a plain gray background that lightens toward the bottom. It is a large, open bowl with sloping walls, a small rounded base, and a wide, slightly uneven rim. There are no people or reference objects, so its real scale is hard to judge. Its surface is woven in very fine, regular horizontal coils, visible as tight lines running around the whole body. A honey or toasted-straw tone dominates, set off by motifs in dark, almost chocolate brown. The texture looks dry, fibrous, and matte; soft light from above casts a diffuse shadow beneath the base and brings out the slight relief of each round of weaving. The decoration is arranged in bands. Below, schematic human figures with rectangular bodies and short legs hold hands in a continuous chain. In the middle band, other figures in triangular skirts raise both arms over their heads; between them are diamonds with a central dot and stepped motifs. Looked at closely, small variations in the thickness and color of the fibers become visible — traces of handwork.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the lower band and follow the chain of figures holding hands around the curved wall. Then move up to compare them with the figures raising their arms. Notice how the diamonds fill the spaces between bodies and how the pattern is designed to be read as the bowl turns.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this presentation bowl was made in 1900 by an unknown weaver of the Yokuts people, who lived in California’s San Joaquin Valley, west of Koso (Panamint) Shoshone territory. It was made by coiling, with a grass foundation and fibers of redbud and bracken fern. The source notes that shared design motifs point to contact between the two regions: the joined human figures in one register also appear on a small Koso (Panamint) Shoshone basket in the same collection. The weaver’s name and the bowl’s precise original use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual detail: the lower figures form an unbroken chain by holding hands, while the upper figures all raise both arms above their heads, as if the bowl carried two different collective gestures at once.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might change in our reading of the bowl if we could turn it slowly and see the full chain of figures?¿Qué cambiaría en nuestra lectura del cuenco si pudiéramos girarlo despacio y ver completa la cadena de figuras?
  2. Why pair joined hands in one band with raised arms in another?¿Por qué combinar manos unidas en una franja y brazos levantados en otra?
  3. How does the repetition of figures and diamonds change when it follows the curve of a container rather than a flat surface?¿Cómo cambia la repetición de figuras y rombos al seguir la curva de un recipiente y no una superficie plana?

I focus on the coiled technique: a grass foundation wrapped with redbud and bracken fern fibers forming very fine, regular horizontal spirals. The honey-colored background lets the dark brown, almost chocolate motifs stand out. I notice how the soft light hits the matte, fibrous surface and reveals each coil and the small variations in thickness and color. The slightly irregular rim and weave speak of handwork and the time invested in making a large, open bowl.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this bowl as a sky organized in bands. At the bottom, a continuous chain of rectangular figures with short legs holding hands circles like a constellation in orbit. In the middle, figures with triangular skirts raise their arms overhead, among diamonds with a central dot and stepped shapes that look like stars and maps. Photographed from above on a smooth gray background, the piece asserts its circular geometry and rhythm, as if each spiral were another turn around a center.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant offering basket but made of braided little straw. It is toasted honey color with dark brown drawings. At the bottom there are little square stick people holding hands going around and around without stopping. Up top there are others with little triangle skirts lifting their arms as if they were dancing. Between them there are diamonds with a tiny dot inside and little stair shapes. If you look close, not everything is even, some threads are a bit thicker and I like that because you can tell someone made it by hand.

  1. #1

In the lower band, what are the rectangular human figures with short legs doing?

    HintPista

Look at the lower band of the bowl, find a row of matching little figures joined together.

  2. #2

What geometric shape with a dot in the center appears among the figures with triangular skirts?

    HintPista

In the central band, between the dancers with raised arms there is a four-sided figure.

  3. #3

What is the predominant background color of the bowl's weave?

    HintPista

Think of a light warm tone like straw or honey against which the dark brown motifs stand out.
