What you would seeLo que verías
Sepia-toned carbon print photograph of three marble pedimental sculptures from the Parthenon displayed on low plinths in a dim gallery. In the foreground on the left, seen in three-quarter back view, a reclining nude male figure rests on a drapery-covered rock; his back, shoulders, arms and torso are powerfully muscled and the marble surface shows pitting, staining and chipped losses. The head in profile retains short curly hair but the face is weathered, and the right arm is bent and truncated at the forearm. Behind him, two headless seated female figures wear finely pleated chitons that cling and pool in heavy folds; one leans on the other with an arm around her shoulder. In the soft-focus background to the right, a standing draped figure bends forward. Soft side light sculpts the volumes, casts deep shadows and emphasizes the granular, porous texture of the stone against a plain dark wall, with pedestals and reflections visible at the bottom edge.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the male figure in the foreground and trace the line from his back to his outstretched knees. Then notice how the delicate, clinging drapery of the female figures contrasts with the smooth muscular torso. Finally observe how sharp focus in front versus soft focus behind creates a sense of depth in the gallery.

Curious detailDato curioso
Adolphe Braun was a pioneer of the carbon print, a highly permanent photographic process prized in the 19th century for art reproduction because it did not fade like albumen prints.

I notice how the sidelight caresses the marble and lets every pore, stain and chip tell its story. This young man reclining, seen from the back, shows musculature carved with a delicacy that time has softened and eroded. I am moved by the contrast between the nude figure in the foreground and the fine folds of the two seated women behind, headless yet still expressive in the way the cloth clings to the body. The warm sepia carbon print preserves all that with a gentle sharpness.

For me it is all about light and shadow, as if these stones were moons. Braun's sepia photograph bathes the sculptures in raking light that sculpts volumes out of the dark gallery, just as sunrise models craters. The young man reclining on his rock looks like a fallen constellation, glowing against a smooth dark wall that acts as a night sky. Behind, the two embracing figures stand out like a double eclipse, and in the background another silhouette fades out of focus, like a distant star barely glimpsed.

They look like tired giants taking a nap in the museum! The man in front is lying down with no clothes on a little rock with a wrinkly blanket, and you can see all the muscles on his back. He is missing part of an arm and his little face is all worn away. Behind him there are two ladies with no heads hugging while seated, with super long dresses full of little lines that look like wet paper stuck to the body. In the back another person is peeking but you cannot see well because it is blurry. Everything looks brownish like an old photo.

Look carefully at the different depths: one very sharp in front, two embracing in the middle, and a blurrier silhouette in the back on the right.
