This print dates to about 1776, made in France by Jean François Janinet after a design by Antoine Coypel, using color wash-manner etching and engraving with applied gold leaf. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Janinet learned the printed gold-leaf border technique from Louis-Marin Bonnet, who developed it in 1774. The two artists made only about twenty prints with gold frames before being stopped, as printmakers were not legally permitted to use gold leaf. The image shows the classical myth of Pomona, a fruit nymph who barred men from her orchard, and Vertumnus, who disguised himself as an old woman to enter and win her with stories of love.
