What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a vertical print, an older man stands frontally, filling almost the full height of the image, with his hands in his pockets. He wears a dark round hat, a long full white beard, a reddish jacket with dark buttons and light cuffs, khaki trousers patched at the knees, and worn shoes. At his feet to the right rests a large brown sack or bundle, bulky and tied, hinting at his trade. The ground is an uneven dirt path with patches of pale green grass and stones, rendered with nervous etching and drypoint lines. In the background stretches a suburban or industrial landscape: small houses with reddish roofs, chimneys puffing coils of grey and black smoke, and a crooked wooden fence on the left. The sky is heavy, speckled with grainy black ink typical of aquatint, creating a hazy, grey atmosphere. Light is diffuse, without hard shadows, and colors — muted ochres, faded pinks, greens and greys — appear as delicate hand-applied watercolor washes over the black linework. At the lower left, the handwritten signature J F Raffaëlli is visible. The composition is frontal, intimate yet desolate, with the figure silhouetted against a low horizon.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bearded face and steady stance of the man, hands in pockets. Then move down to the sack at his feet, which tells his story without action. Finally, let the smoky background of chimneys shift the reading: he is not alone in the countryside, but on the edge of the industrial city.

ContextContexto

This print is by Jean-François Raffaëlli (French, 1850–1924), dated 1911, made with etching, drypoint and aquatint, intaglio techniques that allow fine lines and velvety tones. It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it entered as a gift in memory of Paul H. Oppmann Sr. from his family. Raffaëlli was known for depicting everyday working people and the landscapes of the Parisian suburbs, in line with realism of the late 19th and early 20th century. The title The Rag Picker refers to a common occupation at the time: collecting rags, paper and discarded objects for resale. No further details about edition or printing history are given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Raffaëlli often hand-colored his prints with watercolor washes, like the soft pinks and greens seen here, so each impression is slightly unique even when pulled from the same plate.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at how this image was made: etching for the fine, nervous line, drypoint for those velvety blacks, and aquatint for the misty, grained sky. The ochre, muted pink, and pale green tones do not come from the plate itself but from a delicate hand-applied watercolor, which is why they look so uneven. Look at the brown sack at the man's feet and the patches on his knees: the wear is drawn with honesty, without embellishment, and that is what moves me as a conservator.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What strikes me most is that heavy, grayish sky, speckled with grained black ink that looks like a misty night without stars. It reminds me of watching the horizon from the suburbs: small houses with reddish roofs, chimneys puffing gray smoke plumes, and a crooked fence marking the edge of what can be seen. The man fills almost the whole height of the print, silhouetted against that low horizon, like a lonely constellation. The diffuse light, with no harsh shadows, creates a suspended atmosphere, halfway between day and industrial dusk.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This gentleman looks tired and he is just standing there with his hands in his pockets, as if he is waiting for someone. He has a huge white beard and a dark round hat, and his jacket is reddish with buttons you can actually see. What I like most is his giant brown sack, all bulgy and tied up, sitting next to him on the dirt road. Behind him you can see tiny houses, smoke coming out of chimneys, and a lot of gray sky. I want to ask him what he keeps inside that heavy bag.
