What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal etching in black and sepia ink on cream paper, panoramic in format and enclosed by a fine border. The lower half is a frozen surface, drawn with long horizontal lines and short reflections, and it is full of life: dozens of figures in seventeenth-century dress, with broad hats, cloaks, and breeches, skate, talk in pairs, push sledges, or fall on the ice. On the left, a man pushes a sledge loaded with barrels; nearby, a seated figure sits beside a small running dog, and another sledge is pulled by a horse. At center and right, horse-drawn sledges with curved, prow-like fronts move across the ice, while several skaters tumble together in the lower right corner. Behind them, on a low, elongated platform, stand two large two-story buildings with many rectangular windows, sloping roofs, and decorated triangular pediments; the one on the right dominates the scene and carries a small figure and a flag on its roof. To the left rises a windmill with latticed sails. Between the two buildings, a sailing vessel with a pale sail and a flag appears stranded beside, or held in, the ice. The sky, broad and almost empty, is suggested by faint horizontal strokes, a few clouds at right, smoke above one roof, and five tiny birds. Below the scene, outside the image, one reads “De Block-huÿsen” and a number 9, almost trimmed off.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the figures at the bottom: skaters, conversations, and falls turn the setting into a social scene. Then look up and compare the two large houses and the windmill, which anchor the landscape. Notice the sailing vessel between the buildings; its upright sail against everyone moving on ice gives the image a quiet tension.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this etching by Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman, made between 1638 and 1664, was crafted. Notice the black and sepia ink on cream paper, with its thin border and panoramic format. The ice is built from long horizontal lines and short reflections, while the almost empty sky is suggested with faint strokes. Below you can read De Block-huÿsen and a number 9 almost cropped, traces of the original print now kept in Cleveland.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this seventeenth-century winter and think about the open sky over Amsterdam. It is wide and almost empty, barely marked with faint horizontal strokes, a few clouds to the right, smoke above a roof and five tiny birds in flight. There is no sun or stars, just cold light reflected on the ice crowded with people. I wonder how sunset would look there, with the lattice-sailed windmill silhouetted against that pale sky and the sailing vessel stranded by the buildings.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love everything happening on the ice! There are so many little people with wide hats and capes skating, some falling together in the corner and it must be funny. I see a little dog running, a man pushing a sledge with barrels and fancy horse-drawn sledges with curved prows. In the back there are two big houses with lots of windows and a windmill, and even a sailing vessel with a flag stuck in the ice. It looks like a frozen party!
