Mars: Valles Marineris Hemisphere Mosaic from Viking (1980)Marte: el hemisferio de Valles Marineris en mosaico Viking (1980)

What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents Mars as a full sphere isolated against the pitch-black void of space, seen in point perspective from about 2500 kilometers above the surface. The planetary disk fills most of the frame, its limb softly lit with gentle shading toward the edges that emphasizes curvature and atmosphere. Dominating the visual foreground is the vast gash of Valles Marineris stretching horizontally across the equatorial southern hemisphere; steep canyon walls cast deep bluish-gray and dark brown shadows, with intricate tributary valleys, layered terraces and labyrinthine networks branching off. To the west of the canyon, dark rounded spots mark the massive Tharsis volcanoes. The Martian surface displays a palette of ochres, pale oranges, pinkish tans and toasted browns, modulated by albedo differences and topography. In the mid-background to north-center, pale sinuous channels trace ancient riverbeds running northward from chaotic terrain. The southern hemisphere shows older, heavily cratered highlands dotted with countless small to medium impact craters. Light appears to come from the upper left, sculpting relief, crater rims and ridges with crisp three-dimensional modeling and subtle atmospheric haze near the limb.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by tracing the dark scar of Valles Marineris from west to east and see how shadow conveys depth. Then look upward to the Tharsis volcanoes and the pale winding channels heading north. Linger on the densely cratered southern highlands, where crater abundance signals great age.
ContextContexto
This is the Valles Marineris hemisphere point-perspective mosaic of Mars, made from 102 Viking Orbiter images as described in the source data. Released in 1980 by NASA/USGS through the Astrogeology Science Center, it is centered near latitude -8, longitude 78 and shows the more than 2000 kilometer long canyon system up to 8 kilometers deep, from the arcuate grabens of Noctis Labyrinthus in the west to chaotic terrain in the east. The three Tharsis volcanoes, each about 25 kilometers high, appear as dark spots to the west, with ancient river channels extending north from the central canyons. The view scale is about 0.6 km per pixel, typical of Viking-era global cartography.

Curious detailDato curioso
Valles Marineris is nearly ten times as long and up to four times as deep as the Grand Canyon on Earth, a scale that becomes clear when viewed as a single system across this Viking mosaic.

I focus on how this view of Mars was built, it is not a single photo but a mosaic of 102 Viking orbiter images carefully joined in 1980. Look at the palette of ochres, pale oranges and toasted browns covering the disk, interrupted by the deep bluish shadows of Valles Marineris. I am impressed by the care taken to preserve the three-dimensional effect, with light coming from the upper left that shapes each steep wall and crater without losing sharpness.

What excites me is recognizing the Valles Marineris hemisphere as a spacecraft would see it from about 2500 kilometers high. That dark scar crossing the equator is more than 2000 kilometers long and up to 8 kilometers deep, from Noctis Labyrinthus in the west to chaotic terrain in the east. If you look west you will see the dark spots of the Tharsis volcanoes, and to the north the light sinuous grooves of ancient river channels that start in the chaotic terrain and wind across the lighter ground.

It looks like a giant orange marble floating in the blackness of space. In the middle it has a huge dark scratch, as if someone scraped the planet really hard, that is Valles Marineris. I like counting the little dots that are craters and looking for the round mountains of Tharsis that look like dark spots. There are also light lines like rivers that no longer have water. The picture was made by joining many small photos together so the whole ball looks complete and lit up.
