What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, crowded colour poster on aged cream paper, made up of overlapping scenes like a collage. At the top left, in green letters, reads '100ME'; beneath it an older grey-haired man with a moustache, wearing a brown suit and yellow gaiters, bends forward while holding the hands of a young woman kneeling in a long black dress, her dark curly hair loose, in a pleading gesture. At the top right, 'LA FILLE' stands out in large red block letters above a black '100me..', and below that a small fairground wrestling booth, 'Arènes Romaines', with muscular wrestlers, flags and tiny signs. The lower half is dominated by a street fair: in the centre, two figures with enormous caricatured heads and tall hats grin toward us; on the left a cook in a white apron fries food in a black pan over glowing embers. On the right a young man in a brown suit dances with raised hands before an amused crowd, children in white dresses, a uniformed officer and women in shawls. The palette mixes reds, browns, teals and warm ochres, with soft lithographic shading and visible paper grain. At the bottom, the signature 'FARIA' sits above the huge red word 'AMBIGU-'.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the bold lettering: LA FILLE at the top, AMBIGU- along the bottom, and the repeated '100me' marking the hundredth performance. Then move from the kneeling woman in black above to the oversized laughing heads below; that jump changes the mood from pleading to carnival. End at the small wrestling booth in the background, where another performance is being advertised inside the poster itself.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a French theatre poster by Cândido de Faria (1849-1911), published by Affiches Faria in 1901 for La Fille du garde-chasse at the Ambigu. The repeated inscription '100me' announces the work's hundredth performance, presented as an immense success. The source describes an illustrated poster in two parts; this image corresponds to the left part, measuring 161 x 120 cm, held by the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris. It is not known from these data who wrote the play or who performed in it. The contrast between melodrama and fairground comedy suggests, probably, a popular show that mixed both registers.

Curious detailDato curioso

The poster was printed in two parts; the image preserved here is only the left section, already 161 cm tall, so the complete display would have covered a very large wall surface.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How do you reconcile the kneeling woman's drama with the laughter of the fairground crowd in a single advertisement?¿Cómo conviven en un solo anuncio el drama de la mujer arrodillada y la risa de la multitud de la feria?
  2. What does celebrating a hundredth performance, rather than a premiere, say about how this show was sold?¿Qué dice de la manera de vender este espectáculo que se celebre la representación cien y no el estreno?
  3. What might the missing right half of the poster have shown, judging by the way the word 'AMBIGU-' is cut off?¿Qué podría mostrar la mitad derecha faltante del cartel, a juzgar por cómo queda cortada la palabra 'AMBIGU-'?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at how this 161 by 120 centimeter poster was assembled as a lithographic collage on aged cream paper. I notice the printing grain, the warm ochres, reds and teal greens that still hold the contrast between the melodrama at the top and the fair at the bottom. I read 100ME in green and the large LA FILLE in red, and I think about what it meant to advertise one hundred performances. I worry about the fragility of this left part preserved at the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Even though I usually watch the sky, here the crowd draws me in like a constellation. This 1901 poster by Cândido de Faria for the Ambigu arranges its figures like stars in layers: at the top the intimate gesture of the older man in yellow gaiters and the young woman in a long black dress kneeling, and below the fair with its two enormous hatted heads like comic moons. The little Arènes Romaines sign with wrestlers reminds me how popular entertainment also sought its own epic narrative.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This poster has everything and looks like a story with many scenes at once! At the top there is a mustached man holding the hands of a kneeling girl who seems to be pleading for something. Below there is a really fun fair with two big-headed men in tall hats smiling a lot. I like the cook in the white apron frying food in her black pan over fire, and the young man dancing with his hands up while girls in white dresses and a police officer watch him. I want to go into that fair!

¡Quiero entrar a esa feria!
