What you would seeLo que verías

The square image shows Earth seen obliquely from orbit, with no spacecraft or people visible. In the upper left corner, a narrow strip of pure black marks outer space and the planet's curved edge. Below it stretch deep blue ocean and thin bands of cloud in pale blue, gray, and white. Occupying the upper half and center is an immense, flat cloud mass, brilliant white underneath and softly tinted pink, beige, and gray on top, with fine streaks drawn out horizontally as if combed by wind. Toward the center it narrows into a dark, funnel-like point that descends to the surface — the eruption column's base — casting a broad, diffuse, dark blue shadow over the sea. Beneath the main plume spreads a thinner layer of yellowish-brown and gray ash, blurred like smoke. In the foreground, the intense dark blue ocean is crossed by a long chain of small, puffy white clouds, bright and cottony, running diagonally from the lower left to the right edge. Other broken cloud patches appear at left and bottom. The light is bright and even, without visible sun, and emphasizes both the smooth, almost silky texture of the plume and the granular sparkle of ordinary clouds. The scale feels monumental: a geological event reduced to a point beneath a sky-sized canopy.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the enormous white cloud, then follow it down to the small, dark point where it narrows and touches the Earth: that tiny contact is the eruption. Next, look for the plume's shadow on the ocean and the paler ash spreading beneath it. The contrast between the calm lines of ordinary clouds and the volcano's expanding mass changes the scale of the whole scene.

ContextContexto

This photograph, from NASA's Image and Video Library and credited to NASA/JSC, was taken by the crew of space shuttle Discovery during mission STS-64. According to the source, on the morning of September 19, 1994, two volcanic cones on opposite sides of the six-kilometer-wide sea crater at Rabaul, at the eastern end of New Britain, began erupting with very little warning. Discovery passed just east of the site about 24 hours later, near peak activity and at the start of the second day. The plume rose more than 60,000 feet, over 50,000 people evacuated, and light winds deposited most ash within 20 kilometers.

Curious detailDato curioso

The eruption plume rose more than 60,000 feet — about 18 kilometers — high enough to reach well above the cruising altitude of commercial airliners.

The conservatorLa restauradora

When I look at this image I think about fragility and scale. The immense plume, bright white below and with soft pinkish and beige tones above, looks silky but it is dense ash. Its dark blue shadow on the sea reminds us that every pigment leaves a trace. Below, the yellowish and brownish layer is more opaque, like a dirty varnish over the intense blue of the ocean. I notice how the even light reveals textures: the smooth, wind-combed plume against the grainy, fluffy little clouds running diagonally. It reminds us that conservation is also about understanding disasters.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From orbit Earth becomes a laboratory. Here we see the curved limb of the planet and at the upper left the absolute black of outer space, with no spacecraft or astronauts in view. This oblique photo taken from Discovery during mission STS-64 captures the column narrowing into a dark funnel down to the surface, just after the start of the 1994 eruption at Rabaul. I love the physics: a column over 60,000 feet high flattened by wind into horizontal striations, casting a shadow over the ocean and the low clouds.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like Earth is blowing a giant cloud! I see a huge mushroom that is white with a pinkish belly floating over the very dark blue sea. In the middle it has a tiny funnel going down like a straw where all the smoke comes out. Below there is another yellowish and brownish smoke that looks blurry. And across the ocean there is a row of fluffy little white clouds like popcorn in a diagonal line. The big cloud's shadow is blue and looks like a stain. Everything looks tiny from up so high!
