What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows the curvature of Earth at night as seen from orbit. The horizon line cuts across the middle third of the frame, dividing the absolute black of space above from the luminous display of the aurora below. The aurora fills almost the entire lower and central half with vertical, wavy curtains of intense emerald green light, with variations in brightness and density that look like folds of translucent fabric. Toward the upper center, above the brightest column, a diffuse reddish veil fades into the darkness. In the foreground, green bands overlap the dark silhouette of clouds or the night surface of Earth, creating strong contrasts between shadow and glow. In the black background of space, tiny points of stars are barely visible, and the grain of 35mm film gives a speckled texture to the whole scene. The light seems to emanate from below with no visible source, tinting the edge of the atmosphere with a pale halo. The horizontal composition is immersive, with no human presence or spacecraft visible, focused solely on the natural phenomenon at planetary scale.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the horizon line and follow the green curtains from top to bottom to notice how their texture shifts. Pause on the reddish veil above the central peak, then look for the tiny stars in the blackness to feel the orbital scale.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken between September 12 and 20, 1992, by the crew of Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-47, the Spacelab-J mission. The image, catalogued as STS047-20-015 and held in the NASA Image and Video Library credited to JSC, documents a striking view of the Aurora Australis. According to the source description, the crew observed and photographed extensive auroral activity during eight days in Earth orbit. Individual photographer names are not provided. The Aurora Australis is the southern hemisphere counterpart of the northern lights, caused by solar particles interacting with Earth's magnetosphere.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the grainy texture of the 35mm film that covers the black of space and the emerald green of the aurora. I notice how the luminous curtains form translucent folds with variations in brightness over the nocturnal horizon and the Earth curvature. I am drawn to the central reddish veil that fades away and the pale halo at the edge of the atmosphere. It is a nighttime image with no human presence where light seems to emanate from below and everything depends on the balance between shadow and glow. Preserving that grain and those contrasts means preserving the memory of the STS-47 mission of September 1992.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
What excites me is recognizing the Aurora Australis photographed from orbit during the Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-47 between September 12 and 20, 1992. I see the curvature of the Earth and the horizon separating the black space from the vertical wavy green curtains. Above, over the brightest column, appears that diffuse reddish veil that astronauts report during intense auroral activity. Below, the dark silhouette of clouds contrasts with the glow. It is the southern equivalent of the aurora borealis, caused by solar particles interacting with the magnetosphere.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant magic curtain in space! I see green lights dancing like a see-through skirt with lots of shiny little folds above the sleeping Earth. The Earth is a dark curve and above everything is black with tiny star dots. In the middle there is a little red patch like someone painted with watercolor and it is fading away. No astronaut or ship appears, just the green light lighting up the clouds below. I imagine the aurora is singing silently with light.
