Vertical sheet, higher than it is wide, with the landscape developed in brown ink lines and ink wash, with white heightening, over light indications in black chalk, on pink prepared paper (35.2 x 26.5 cm). At the top, calm water — the sea or a lake — whose left shore enters diagonally from the upper left corner with fine, unobtrusive strokes. In the centre a promontory or headland rises steeply, modelled in places with a dense lattice of parallel lines and cross-hatching, like a woven mesh that conveys hardness and erosion. That protruding volume concentrates the greatest tonal weight and opens the two directions of the drawing: downward to the right the slope descends with oblique hatchings and a more agitated, broken shoreline; to the left the slope eases toward dwellings whose roofs and walls are sketched in summary rectangular lines. Below the houses, meadows dotted with flowers and a margin with small leafed plants — each leaf drawn separately, like a botanical sample — mark the transition to the valley. The immediate foreground is a cultivated field of arched, regular furrows crossing the whole lower edge of the sheet, a terrestrial band that reads as a threshold and sets the scale. Every element relies on line, pattern and tonal stain; there is no colour beyond the ink and the pink ground. On that ground, the rugged, aged forms — the mountain above all — sit against the apparent calm and order of the field, the flowers and the water.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the land emerging between fog on the right, then move upward until you find the dark patch of the summit just right of centre. Let your eye travel along the diagonal of the slope, from the meadows flecked with yellow down to the strata and the furrowed field that close the scene at the bottom. Notice how the only fully calm axis is the water's edge, against which everything else — mountain, mist, trees — leans and softens.

ContextContexto

Perspective study of a landscape kept at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, attributed to the workshop of Leonardo da Vinci, with a date of around 1475-1480 and no signature. It is an early attempt to record a real place with topographic intent: rather than an ideal backdrop invented for a religious scene, the drawing observes terrain, water and vegetation as a subject in its own right. Circle drawings of this type were used to learn how relief is built up and how fields, wooded slopes and shorelines connect — training for the eye as much as for the hand. The specific site has not been securely identified.

Curious detailDato curioso

Leonardo's earliest dated drawing is a landscape of the Arno valley from 1473, drawn when he was 21; this sheet, made only a few years later within his circle, shows how quickly that way of looking at nature spread through the workshop.

I focus on how this vertical sheet, 35.2 × 26.5 cm, is made. I see brown ink with washes and white heightening over charcoal, all on pink prepared paper that still shows through underneath. What interests me most is the central promontory: it is built with a dense network of hatched parallel lines crossing like a woven mesh, which gives it weight and a sense of eroded rock. Below, by contrast, the furrows of the cultivated field are arched and regular, almost a pattern. That difference between the rough hatching of the mountain and the calm of the water and meadows is the whole tension of the drawing.

I look at this study from around 1475-1480 as an exercise in perspective, not an invented backdrop. The drawing organizes space in layers: the field with arched furrows in the immediate foreground as a threshold, the small houses with rectangular roofs halfway up the slope, the large rugged cape in the center and, above, the calm water whose shoreline enters diagonally from the upper left corner. Everything is line and tonal wash on the pink ground. I wonder what real place Leonardo's workshop wanted to record, because the site has not been securely identified, but the topographic intention is clear: learning how to connect terrain, water and vegetation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This mountain looks like chocolate with little lines! In the middle there is a big chunk of dark rock full of little crosses, and on one side it slopes gently down to tiny houses with boxy roofs. At the bottom there is a field with furrows like waves going from one side of the sheet to the other. If you look closely, you see dotted little flowers and plants where each tiny leaf is drawn one by one. At the top is the calm water. I like that the paper is pinkish and that everything is made only with brown ink, with no other colors.

What background color is everything drawn on with brown ink and white touches?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, it shows behind the ink across the whole sheet.
