What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a mosaic of about 38 small black-and-white radar frames arranged in a strict grid against a deep, grainy black background. Each frame isolates the asteroid Nereus as a mottled, luminous blot with an irregular, lumpy outline, rendered in speckled grays and whites that dissolve at the edges into static. The overall composition is orderly and archival: six horizontal rows read left to right, with seven columns at the top, tapering to fewer frames at the bottom where a solid black rectangle fills the lower right corner as a placeholder. Colors are limited to absolute black, soft charcoal, pale gray and bright white, with no hue. The light is not sunlight but radar echo, producing a porous, sandy texture marked by brighter knots that hint at boulders, ridges and depressions. Across the sequence the asteroid appears to rotate subtly, shifting from more elongated, pointed profiles to rounder, flatter ones. The scale feels remote and instrumental, conveying cold precision, repetition and the quiet of a distant object caught momentarily by a powerful antenna.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Scan the grid like a film strip from top left to bottom, then linger on a single frame to trace its jagged edge. Notice the brightest specks inside the shape that suggest topography. Compare frames two rows apart to see rotation turn a pointed silhouette into a more rounded one.

ContextContexto

According to source data, these are radar observations by NASA/JPL-Caltech acquired on Dec. 10, 2021, using the 70-meter antenna at Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow, California. They were taken a day before asteroid 4660 Nereus passed within about 2.5 million miles, or 4 million kilometers, of Earth on Dec. 11. The near-Earth asteroid is about 1,100 feet, or 330 meters, wide and was imaged at about 12.3 feet, or 3.75 meters, per pixel, the most detailed radar view since its discovery almost four decades earlier. Its orbit is very well known and it poses no threat to Earth. It belongs to the relatively rare E-type family, which is optically bright and shows unusual radar scattering, probably due to very rough terrain.

Curious detailDato curioso

As an E-type asteroid, Nereus can reflect up to about 50 percent of the sunlight it receives, making it far brighter optically than most asteroids despite its dark radar appearance.

  1. How does seeing many moments at once change your sense of motion for an object in space?¿Qué nos dice esta cuadrícula sobre el tiempo y el movimiento si cada cuadro es un instante distinto?
  2. What does the grain and noise tell us about how we know what we know from a distance?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de una roca espacial al verla como eco y ruido en lugar de foto nítida?
  3. Why might a scientifically precise image also feel mysterious or fragile?¿Qué sientes al saber que un objeto de 330 metros pasó a millones de kilómetros mientras era observado con esta precisión?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I am fascinated by how this orderly grid preserves the radar echo as if it were a fragile texture. The mosaic of black-and-white vignettes on a deep black background shows the porous silhouette of Nereus with soft edges and grain that feels like sand with static. Each frame records a slight turn, from elongated shapes to rounder outlines. As a restorer I think about cleaning that noise without erasing the grays that hint at craters and ridges, respecting the cold precision of the scientific observation.

What you see is not sunlight but the bounce of Goldstone radar from December 10, 2021, a day before Nereus flew about 4 million kilometers from us. With its 70-meter antenna in California it captured this roughly 330-meter asteroid at about 3.75 meters per pixel, the most detailed view since its discovery almost 40 years ago. I love following the sequence: six rows that slowly rotate and reveal a type E, bright and very rugged, with a well-known orbit that poses no threat.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like cookies floating in space, but they are pictures of an asteroid spinning little by little. There are many small boxes with white spots on a black background and they all have dots like salt and pepper. Some spots look long and pointy and others look chubbier and rounder. I like to imagine it is a giant rock doing pirouettes in the dark and that at the bottom there is an empty black square where it hid to play hide and seek.

How many vignettes showing the asteroid do you count in total in the mosaic, not counting the empty black block in the corner?

    HintPista

Look at the full grid: there are six rows and almost every row has seven little boxes, but one is missing at the bottom right.

  2. #2

Is the mosaic in full color or in white, black and grays?

    HintPista

The light is not from the Sun but radar echo, so everything looks like sand with static.

What orderly shape organizes all the small images of the asteroid?

    HintPista

Think of a chart with rows and columns where each little box shows a different pose in the spin.
