What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a mosaic of twelve rectangular panels arranged in three columns and four rows, divided by thin, regular white lines that form a grid. Every panel shares the same black or very dark gray background, covered in dense, even grain reminiscent of television static or fine sand. Near the center of each cell sits a single small, luminous shape with an irregular outline, in white, pale gray, and mid-gray tones, its fuzzy edges partly dissolving into the background. Read from left to right and top to bottom, the shape looks like an elongated rock, lumpy and uneven. In the first panels it lies almost horizontally, like a low mound with two or three bumps. It then tilts, appears to shorten, becomes more compact, and in the lower right cells turns diagonal, almost vertical, with one noticeably brighter end. Those shifts suggest a single body rotating or tumbling over time, not twelve different objects. There are no sharp stars, people, text, or scale references inside the panels. Scale is deceptive: the bright smudge occupies only a small fraction of each frame and floats in isolation. The brightness does not behave like sunlight in an ordinary photograph; brighter areas mark stronger echoes, darker ones a weak or absent signal. The overall texture is rough, grainy, and low in resolution, typical of instrument data rendered as an image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, read the grid from left to right and top to bottom, as if it were a strip of film. Then follow the bright rim: its changing tilt is what reveals the tumbling motion. Notice, too, that the black grain is not a starry sky, but the noise of an instrument listening for a faint echo.

ContextContexto

According to the source, these are radar observations of the near-Earth asteroid 2001 FO32, released on April 5, 2021, by NASA/JPL-Caltech and NSF/AUI/GBO. On March 21, 2021, the asteroid passed about 2 million kilometers from Earth, roughly 5 1/4 times the Earth-Moon distance, with no risk of collision because its orbit was well known. Scientists transmitted signals from the 34-meter DSS-13 antenna at Goldstone, California, and received the echoes reflected from its surface with the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. Such observations help refine its orbit, size, rotation, and possible surface features. It was discovered in March 2001; details beyond the source description are not confirmed here.

Curious detailDato curioso

This is not an optical photograph: the asteroid was 'illuminated' with radio signals from Earth, and the image was built from the echo that bounced back, received in this case by an antenna about 100 meters across.

  1. How does our idea of an asteroid change when we see it not as a sharp portrait, but as a faint echo transformed into an image?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de un asteroide cuando no lo vemos como un retrato nítido, sino como un eco tenue transformado en imagen?
  2. What can twelve crude, grainy frames tell us about a body's rotation that a single, clearer image could not?¿Qué pueden decirnos doce cuadros toscos y granulosos sobre la rotación de un cuerpo que una sola imagen más clara no podría mostrar?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at that perfect grid of twelve panels. The white lines separating each frame are like the joints in a conservation mosaic. What I see is not a normal photo, it is an echo turned into an image, with that grainy black background like fine sand or static. I love how the brightness reveals the signal: intense white is a strong radar bounce, gray is weaker. Following the little rotating speck, I imagine the care of those who captured that bounce to preserve its shape.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

There is no camera here, there is radar. They sent a signal from the 34-meter DSS-13 antenna in Goldstone, California, and listened for its bounce with the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. Asteroid 2001 FO32 flew by on March 21, 2021 at about 2 million kilometers, more than five times the distance to the Moon, with no danger. The twelve panels show the same body spinning: first elongated and horizontal, then tilted and almost vertical. Brightness means echo strength, not sunlight.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a game of twelve identical stickers but they are not the same. In each little square there is a black background with speckles like a TV with no signal and in the middle a glowing pebble floats. If you look in order, the pebble moves like doing a somersault in space, sometimes lying down and sometimes standing up. It is tiny and alone in the dark. I like to think it is the same asteroid dancing slowly while they take pictures of it with a giant radar.
