What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep, velvety black background speckled with countless turquoise, cyan and pale blue points, two elongated and intertwined forms float diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. The structure resembles a shiny mask or domino mask. Its outlines and spiral arms are traced by filamentary, clumpy clouds in pale pink, magenta and reddish tones, with a pearly, hazy texture that suggests illuminated cosmic dust. Inside each lobe of this double shape lies an intense, glowing core of electric blue and cyan, almost circular, larger and brighter at the lower left and smaller and more diffuse at the upper right, like two eyes peeking through holes. Between them, pinkish filaments create a bridge of matter joining the pair. Around them, small cyan stars form halos and scattered clusters, some with a faint cross-shaped glare. The light is cool and high-contrast, with warm pinks standing out sharply against the dark void. The image has a digital scientific quality, high definition but with a soft grain typical of infrared. There is no human scale; the scene conveys immensity and accidental symmetry, like a face glimpsed sideways in the darkness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First let the face emerge: two blue eyes inside a reddish mask. Then follow the pink filaments that connect both galaxies and notice how the bridge reveals they are not two separate objects but a single colliding system.

ContextContexto

The image, titled Ready for the Cosmic Ball and dated April 26, 2006, was captured by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and processed by JPL-Caltech/Vassar. According to the source description, what appear as blue eyes behind a red mask are actually the cores of two merging galaxies, NGC 2207 and IC 2163. It is a false-color infrared image, where hues are not as the human eye would see them but scientific assignments to distinguish starlight from dust. Such images illustrate gravitational interaction between galaxies, a common process in the evolution of the universe.

Curious detailDato curioso

Spitzer observed in infrared light and this image combines different wavelengths: cyan-blue marks light from old stars in the galactic cores, while red reveals dust heated by new star formation.

What you see as a pearly pink mask is not paint, it is warm cosmic dust glowing in infrared. The Spitzer Space Telescope captured this scene on April 26, 2006 and the JPL-Caltech/Vassar team assigned these colors so we can read it. Pale pink and magenta trace the spiral arms and the bridge joining both galaxies, while electric blue and cyan mark the cores and starlight. I am interested in how false color makes the invisible visible without hiding its scientific origin.

At first glance it looks like a masquerade mask with two bright eyes, but those eyes are the cores of NGC 2207 and IC 2163, two galaxies in the process of merging. The larger and brighter one is at the lower left, the smaller and more diffuse one at the upper right, linked by pink filaments that form a bridge of material. The deep velvety black background is speckled with turquoise and sky-blue glints. It is pure pareidolia: our brain sees a face where gravity and dust interact on an immense scale.

It looks like a superhero mask hiding in the darkness! I see two blue eyes shining brightly, like flashlights, and around them a pink cloud shaped like a mask that connects them. It floats diagonally over a black background full of turquoise-blue dots that look like tiny diamonds. I like to imagine the two galaxies are dancing and holding hands with that pink bridge. It feels a bit mysterious but also pretty and sparkly.
