What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a vertical diptych, edged in black and split by a thick horizontal black band. It is not an optical photograph but a radar image, so the landscape reads as both map and relief. The upper panel bursts with saturated colour: a bright cyan expanse fills the top left, interrupted by two large, dark navy, almost silhouetted bodies of water. Below them, a jagged mountain chain cuts diagonally across the frame, its peaks outlined in acid green, lemon yellow, hot pink, violet and deep purple, as if a topographic model had been painted in neon. In the lower centre, a smoother mass spreads out in dusty rose, mauve, gold and pale grey, with soft, cloudy edges and faint streaks radiating downhill: the glacier and ice field. The lower panel repeats the same terrain in grainy black, white and grey, with sharp shadows that model every ridge and valley. The lakes become dark pools. Only along the bottom does colour return, in turquoise, royal blue, green, yellow and two intense red patches marking a curved flow. Tiny speckles, thin lines and rough, granular textures cover the surface throughout.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the upper panel and let the electric colours pull you across the ridges, then drop to the grey panel below and find the same lakes and mountains again in monochrome. At the end, focus on the yellow and red tongue in the lower left: what seemed like abstract decoration becomes information about ice in motion.

ContextContexto

This scientific image by NASA/JPL, dated 15 April 1999 in the source record, shows the San Rafael Glacier in the Patagonian ice fields of Chile. It was produced from interferometric measurements by SIR-C/X-SAR, a radar instrument flown aboard the Space Shuttle. According to the source, it provided the first detailed measurements of the glacier's mass and motion, in a vast, remote region where very few glaciers had been measured before. The aim was to understand how glaciers respond to climate change and how that response may affect sea level. The exact colour scale is not explained in the available record.

Curious detailDato curioso

According to the source description, the Patagonian ice fields account for more than 60 percent of the Southern Hemisphere's glacial area outside Antarctica, yet at the time velocity had been measured on only five of their more than one hundred glaciers.

Come close and you will see this is not a photo but a radar print in a vertical diptych. I focus on the thick black frame and the heavy horizontal band that splits the image in two. On top the color is saturated and grainy, with tiny speckles and fine lines across the surface. Below the same land turns into relief in white, black and gray, with shadows shaping every ridge and valley. My job is to preserve those rough textures and the faint striations of the glacier without losing the contrast between neon and grain.

What excites me most is that this was not taken with a camera but with radar from space. It is an image of San Rafael Glacier made by NASA and JPL on April 15 1999 with the SIR-C/X-SAR instrument on the space shuttle. It was among the first to measure in detail the mass and movement of that remote glacier in Chilean Patagonia. On top you see the map in false color, below the topography in black and white that reveals the relief as if lit from the side by the sun.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a candy world painted with neon markers! On top there is a bright cyan patch with two navy blue lakes that look like ink blots. Then comes a mountain with peaks in acid green, lemon yellow, pink and purple. Below everything turns gray like the moon, with shadows that make the mountains look tall. And at the very bottom there are two super bright red dots making a curve, as if someone sprinkled glitter at the end of the ice river.
