What you would seeLo que verías

The work presents two rectangular panels stacked vertically on a black background, each a scientific image in deep blue and black tones. Across the center of each panel stretches a luminous, irregular and wavy band in electric blue and whitish cyan, the aurora itself. The band is brighter and sharper in some segments, more diffuse and branched in others, with small knots and filamentary structures. A thin white graticule overlays the scene, marking parallels and meridians labeled «60 N», «50 N», «70 N» and longitudes such as «165 W» and «185 W». White uppercase text appears at the lower left of each panel: «AURORA 5 SCET 97.312 4:29:56» on top and «AURORA 6 SCET 97.312 5:15:26» below. The upper panel is slightly cropped at the top, while the lower panel more clearly shows the curvature of the planet's limb as a thin bright rim along the upper edge. A small brilliant white dot appears near the lower right edge of the upper panel. The overall texture is grainy, typical of a processed ultraviolet image, with pixelated edges and soft contrast between the auroral glow and the darkness of the polar region.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the central luminous band and notice how its shape shifts between the upper and lower panel. Then trace the white latitude and longitude lines to locate Jupiter's north pole. Look for the small bright knots and where the aurora thins or widens, which reveals its dynamic nature.

ContextContexto

The image is credited to NASA / JPL-Caltech and dated June 10, 1998 in the NASA Image and Video Library. It is part of a time series of Jupiter's polar aurora captured by instruments aboard a spacecraft, likely the Galileo mission which orbited Jupiter from 1995 to 2003. The SCET labels indicate spacecraft event time and allow comparison of the auroral oval's evolution in under an hour. The specific instrument is not stated in the provided data, but such views correspond to ultraviolet observations. Jupiter's auroras are the most powerful in the Solar System, linked to its strong magnetosphere and to interaction with the moon Io.

Curious detailDato curioso

Jupiter's auroras are invisible to the unaided eye from Earth, studied in ultraviolet light, and are hundreds of times more energetic than Earth's, forming a near-permanent oval around each magnetic pole.

If you look closely you will see a grainy and pixelated texture typical of a processed ultraviolet image, with soft contrasts between electric blue and the deep black of the background. I am interested in how the whitish cyan light becomes sharp in some sections and diffuse in others, forming knots and filaments along the wavy band. The white grid of parallels and meridians organizes that chaotic glow and helps us preserve the scientific reading without erasing its beauty.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Here you have two snapshots of Jupiter's north pole taken less than an hour apart, on June 10 1998 by a NASA spacecraft, probably Galileo. The luminous band is the auroral oval, far more energetic than ours, powered by Jupiter's giant magnetosphere and its interaction with Io. Notice the SCET labels with the exact spacecraft time and the coordinates like 60 N and 165 W mapping the aurora. The bright limb at the top and the small bright spot below remind you that we are looking at a real planet.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two space photos stacked like a dark sandwich. In the middle there is a blue ribbon glowing like an electric streamer, sometimes thin and sharp and sometimes fluffy with little branches of light. The background is super black like a moonless night and on top there are little white lines like a tic-tac-toe grid. At the bottom there are white letters and numbers that show the spacecraft time. I like to imagine Jupiter turned on its blue necklace for a party.
