What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical outdoor image shot into the light captures a rocket climb under a pale blue sky scattered with thin, wispy high clouds. On the left the sun shines as a brilliant, blown-out disc, with the rocket’s delicate white trail cutting diagonally just beside it; to the right a massive plume of white to light-gray smoke billows upward in a thick, cotton-like column with soft billowing edges that snakes toward the top of the frame. In the lower third, on uneven green grass, about two dozen people stand with their backs and profiles to the camera, most equipped with cameras and tripods. One can make out caps, plaid shirts, backpacks, and long lenses pointed skyward, some arms raised to photograph. Behind them a dark line of dense trees marks the horizon. Morning light is harsh, casting long shadows across the grass and creating strong contrast between the slightly shaded foreground and the luminous sky. Textures stand out: the dense, spongy smoke, the sun-bleached glare, the patchy grass, and the crisp silhouettes of gear and foliage.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the sun and the slender rocket trail beside it, then follow the towering smoke column down to the ground. Then look at the cluster of photographers and journalists below and notice how their stances and gear frame the launch as a shared spectacle. Observe how the backlight turns people and trees into silhouettes and makes the smoke appear almost tangible against the blue.

ContextContexto

This is an official NASA photograph taken on September 10, 2011, at 9:08 a.m. EDT, showing the United Launch Alliance Delta II Heavy rocket lifting NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) from Space Launch Complex 17B at Cape Canaveral, Florida. According to source data the view is from Press Site 1 and credited to photographer Kim Shiflett. GRAIL sent twin spacecraft on a three-month cruise to the Moon to precisely map variations in lunar gravity, aiming to reveal differences in crust and mantle density and to inform questions about interior structure, thermal evolution, and impact history.

Curious detailDato curioso

GRAIL consisted of twin spacecraft nicknamed Ebb and Flow that flew in formation around the Moon, measuring tiny changes in the distance between them to create the most accurate gravity map of another celestial body at that time.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the tricky backlighting in this image. The sun bursts on the left and leaves the grass in half shadow, while the sky remains pale blue with wispy clouds. The whitish gray smoke column looks cottony and dominates the right side, with the thin rocket trail beside it. I am interested in how those blown out whites and the dark greens of the grass are preserved without losing detail in the silhouettes and tripods.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What we see here is the start of a three month journey to the Moon. On September 10 2011 at 9:08 a.m., the Delta II Heavy lifted off from Complex 17B at Cape Canaveral with the GRAIL mission. It carried twin probes to measure the lunar gravity field with unprecedented precision. That white trail next to the sun is its first path upward. Thanks to them we better understand the internal structure, the heat and the craters of our satellite.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at all the people looking at the sky! Everyone has their back turned with cameras and tripods as if they were hunting a shooting star. The sun shines super bright and right next to it a little white line goes up which is the rocket. On the right there is a giant cloud of smoke that looks like cotton candy twisting around. Below there is green grass and trees in the back. I feel like everyone is excited with their arms up taking photos at the same time.

What color and texture is the large column that winds to the right of the rocket trail?

    HintPista

Look at the fluffy shape with soft edges that fills the right half of the sky.

  3. #3

In the lower third of the photo, what objects do the people grouped on the grass carry and use to look at the sky?
