What you would seeLo que verías
The frame is filled entirely by clouds seen from above, with no horizon, land, aircraft, or other reference to convey scale. Slightly left of center, a dark, tilted oval opens up: blue-grey, almost smooth, and noticeably emptier than its surroundings. This is the eye, encircled by a dense, uneven wall of white cloud. Around it, bands spiral outward in soft arcs, fading from crisp, lumpy textures near the center to a diffuse, milky veil toward the edges. On the left and upper parts of the ring, grey-blue shadows fall across the inner slope, giving the vortex depth and a sense of a vast funnel viewed from above. Small wisps and broken patches of cloud cross the dark interior, especially along its left side, while the lower right is brighter and more solid. The light is even and bright, with no harsh glare; it models the cauliflower-like tops of the clouds and leaves the center in a quiet, somber tone. The overall impression is abstract at first glance — a white swirl around a dark pupil — until the meteorological structure becomes clear.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark oval at the center, then follow the spiral outward and notice how the clouds tighten around it. Look at the shadows inside the ring: they reveal that this flat-looking white surface has depth, height, and movement.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this photograph was taken from the International Space Station on October 10, 2018, and shows Hurricane Michael after it made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on the Florida Panhandle. The National Hurricane Center reported maximum sustained winds near 145 mph, with a risk of dangerous storm surge and heavy rainfall in the area. The image is credited to NASA/JSC and is catalogued in the NASA Image and Video Library under the code in its title. The name of the individual photographer is not given in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
In a mature hurricane, the eye can be relatively clear and calm, while the strongest winds are concentrated in the eyewall, the ring of clouds immediately surrounding it.

Looking at this piece as a surface, I am struck by the contrast of textures. The white ring is lumpy, with cotton or cauliflower relief shaped by even light, while the central oval is smooth, dark and almost empty in a deep grayish blue. I look for no horizon or scale, only layers of cloud spinning in a spiral. The bluish gray shadows on the left give depth, like a funnel, and the interior shows loose shreds that recall the fragile balance between calm and threat.

From the International Space Station, on October 10 2018, this photo lets us see Hurricane Michael as a satellite would but with a human eye. The tilted dark oval is the eye, surrounded by the dense eyewall. I like to imagine the orbit about 400 kilometers high and how, even with no land for reference, the perfect spiral of the storm stands out. It is orbital science that makes meteorology visible: 145 mile per hour winds translated into white swirls and shadows.

At first it looks like a giant floating eye. The center is a dark bluish gray pupil, a bit empty and calm, but around it there are lots of fluffy white clouds spinning like when you stir chocolate milk. One side is bright and the other has shadows that make it look deep, like a slide. Inside the eye there are little loose bits of cloud. It feels a bit scary and calm at the same time, as if the hurricane were watching us from above.
