What you would seeLo que verías

An almost completely abstract image, seen from directly above, with no horizon or visible scale. Along the entire left edge runs a narrow, vertical band of land in pale beige, sand and dusty pink tones, with a softly wavering shoreline and a few darker, greyish patches toward the bottom. Everything else is sea. Near the coast the water is dark green and almost black, dotted with small, isolated white and mint-green ovals. Toward the centre and the right, the composition fills with an intricate mosaic of irregular shapes in turquoise, teal, pale aqua and icy white: these are the reefs, separated by a branching network of very dark blue, nearly black channels that wind like veins or riverbeds. The reef patches vary from tiny specks to broad, cloud-like masses, the largest spreading across the lower right. The upper right corner deepens to an intense navy blue, empty of reefs. Small dark dots and faint specks are scattered across the surface — marks of the photograph itself — and the overall texture feels smooth and liquid, like marble, stained glass or ink dispersing in water, with no people, boats or buildings visible at all.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the left, where pale land meets the sea, and then move slowly rightward as if you were swimming out from shore. Notice how the reefs become larger and more tangled the further you get from the coast. That dark, branching network is not shadow: it is deeper water cutting channels between each reef.

ContextContexto

NASA identifies this image as ISS009-E-23808, photographed on 20 September 2004 by a crew member of Expedition 9 aboard the International Space Station. It shows a fringing coral reef system in the Red Sea along the Sudanese coast, between Port Sudan to the northwest and the Tokar River delta to the southeast, according to the source description. Close to shore, reefs line the coast; further out lies a larger, more complex barrier reef. NASA scientists note that these structures are built mainly from calcium carbonate deposited by corals over thousands of years, on shallow shelves less than 50 metres deep in this sea.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Arabic, coral reefs like these are called "shi'ab" — a word the NASA description itself includes when noting that the clear waters and abundance of reefs off Sudan are well known to divers.

If you look closely, the sea is not just blue. Near the beige strip of land on the left, the water is dark green, almost black, with white and mint green ovals. Toward the center and right the mosaic opens up: turquoise, pale aquamarine and icy white separated by very dark blue channels that snake like veins. I am interested in how the photo keeps that smooth, liquid texture, like stained glass or ink in water, with its faint specks from the shot itself. We need to read the densities and care for those contrasts without adding anything.

This was not taken from a plane but from the International Space Station, image ISS009-E-23808 from September 20, 2004 during Expedition 9. What you see is the coast of Sudan in the Red Sea, between Port Sudan and the Tokar delta, with no horizon or visible scale. That straight-down view makes the landscape abstract: land is a vertical strip on the left and everything else is sea. I love to think that a crew member in orbit captured with a camera that reef that looks like a map of another planet.

It looks like a giant drawing made with watercolors in water! On the left there is a thin beige line which is the beach, and everything else is sea in many colors. Close to shore there are tiny white and green dots, like sprinkles. In the middle there are big turquoise and white blobs separated by dark blue lines that look like ant trails or veins. Down on the right there is a huge white cloud which is the biggest reef. There are no boats or people, just the sea pretending to be a painting.

What colors make up the reef mosaic in the center and right: turquoise, pale aquamarine and what other very light tone?

    HintPista

Think of the color of the brightest patches that look like clouds over the water.

  3. #3

What are the dark branching lines that separate the reef patches like veins called?
