The image is a detailed cutaway illustration of the North American X-15 rocket plane shown in a three-quarter side view, nose to the right and tail to the left, set against a smooth off-white background. The forward half of the long, slender fuselage is cut open to expose its inner systems, while the rear remains enclosed. The exterior is rendered in matte black with metallic silver and gray panels suggesting skin and structure. At the tail, the XLR-99 rocket engine is visible in copper and gold tones with its prominent nozzle, along with short trapezoidal wings and a vertical stabilizer marked with a yellow NASA band in black lettering. Thin leader lines label internal components in English: anhydrous ammonia tank, liquid oxygen tank, helium tanks, hydrogen peroxide, attitude rockets on the nose and wing, auxiliary power units, liquid nitrogen tank and ejection seat beneath the cockpit. A small canopy reveals the pilot's position. Even, textbook lighting eliminates harsh shadows, emphasizing rivets, ribbing, tubing and the dense, engineered quality of a scientific cutaway meant for public education.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the sleek black outline and the NASA tail marking, then follow the callout lines into the exposed interior. Linger on the cockpit and on the tiny attitude rockets at nose and wing, as they show this aircraft was designed to fly where conventional aerodynamic surfaces no longer work.

ContextContexto

According to data from the NASA Image and Video Library, this is a cutaway drawing of the North American X-15 dated January 20, 1962, credited to NASA/AFRC. The X-15 was an experimental rocket-powered aircraft jointly operated by NASA and the U.S. Air Force to study hypersonic flight at the edge of the atmosphere. Flown from the late 1950s through the late 1960s, it set speed and altitude records, with several flights exceeding altitudes recognized as space. This educational diagram highlights its propulsion and control systems, such as the XLR-99 engine and the attitude rockets needed for maneuvering outside dense air.

Curious detailDato curioso

The X-15 remains the fastest crewed powered aircraft ever flown in controlled atmospheric flight, reaching Mach 6.7 with pilot William J. Knight in 1967.

I focus on how this illustration preserves every material so the interior is clear. The light cream background makes the matte black fuselage stand out, combined with silver and gray metallic areas, rivets and even textures. At the front, the transparent canopy and the cutaway reveal the ejectable seat and the tiny pilot figure. At the back the XLR-99 rocket engine shines in golden and copper tones, and the vertical tail shows the yellow stripe with black NASA lettering. The thin English labels guide the eye without crowding.

This 1962 X-15 excites me because it is the bridge between airplane and spacecraft. Here we see it in a three-quarter view with the nose to the right, cut open to show what let it fly so high and fast. Labels point to the anhydrous ammonia tank, the liquid oxygen tank, the helium tanks and the XLR-99 engine at the rear. You can also spot the attitude rockets on the nose and wings, used to maneuver outside dense air, where aerodynamic control no longer works.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a toy airplane with a little lid removed to see what is inside! It is black with silver, with tiny trapezoid wings and a tail with a yellow stripe that says NASA in black. If you look through the little window you can see a tiny pilot sitting on his ejectable seat. At the back it has a golden engine with a big nozzle. There are small labels with thin lines pointing to tanks and little bottles. Everything is drawn very clearly, like learning while playing.

  1. #1

Find the airplane tail: what color is the stripe that carries the black NASA lettering?

    HintPista

Look at the rear part, on the vertical tail, against the light cream background.

  2. #2

At the rear of the cutaway, what golden and copper engine with an exposed nozzle is labeled?

    HintPista

It is the large component sticking out at the end of the fuselage, behind the short wings.

  3. #3

Count the visible exterior elements: what covers the front cockpit and what human figure is seen inside?

    HintPista

Look at the front half, right where the fuselage cutaway begins.
