What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white photograph taken directly from above, almost like an architectural plan come to life. Most of the frame is occupied by a large, dark, octagonal board set diagonally, its straight edges running from corner to corner. On top of it sits a pale, sharply lit model with a closed, angular loop, like a thick rectangular ring bent at the corners. Its flat roofs look partly translucent and reveal faint interior divisions, small blocks, hatches and raised details; along its narrower corridors there are rows of tiny dark rectangles. Near the centre, a stretch of banded cylinders connects two arms of the loop, beside a perfectly round, pitch-black opening that reads as a deep well against all the greys. From the top edge, a funnel-shaped neck extends toward the model. The surrounding floor is covered with small crosses, dashes and pale square markers, placed like a secret measurement code. The light is hard and directional, with soft shadows falling to one side and a bright sheen on the smooth surfaces, while the edges of the image fall into near darkness. No people appear, so the scale is ambiguous: it could look like a real building photographed from the air, until the seams, screws and model-like finishes give it away.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark octagonal board and notice how its diagonal orientation fills almost the whole frame. Then follow the pale loop of the model until you reach the cylindrical section and the black circle in the centre. That dark spot, and the tiny marks scattered across the floor, change the reading: this is not an aerial view of a building, but a carefully measured experiment.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this photograph, credited to Clayton and Carnahan and released by NASA/ARC, as dated 12 March 1976 at NASA Ames. It shows a 1/50-scale model of the 80-by-120-foot wind tunnel of the NFAC — the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex — placed inside the test section of the 40-by-80-foot wind tunnel. According to the source description, the model was mounted on a rotating ground board designed for this test. In general, wind tunnels are used to study how air moves around an object or structure before building it at full size. Exactly what was being measured in this specific run is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso
The most surprising thing is structural: this is a wind tunnel inside another wind tunnel — a small model of a huge facility being tested with the very kind of airflow it would one day produce.

From my bench I first look at materials: this black-and-white photograph from March 12, 1976, credited to Clayton and Carnahan for NASA Ames, preserves a bright model on a dark octagonal board. I am struck by how the hard light creates highlights on the plastic and reveals translucent roofs, internal partitions and screws. The contrast between the pale circuit and the shadowed background calls for careful conservation of the silver gelatin print.

I look up and think about scales. What you see is a 1/50 scale model of the NFAC 80 by 120 foot wind tunnel, placed inside the test section of the 40 by 80 foot tunnel, on a rotating board. The idea of a tunnel inside another tunnel reminds me of nesting dolls, but here it helps test airflow before building full size. The perfect black circular opening at the center looks like an eclipse.

It looks like a giant marble run! The dark board is octagonal, like a superhero table, and on top there is a thick circuit shaped like a bent rectangle. It has roofs that look see-through, like a toy, and lots of little rectangles and striped cylinders. In the middle there is a black hole that looks like a bottomless well. No people appear, so I cannot tell if it is huge or tiny.
