What you would seeLo que verías
The illustration presents a detailed cutaway side view of NASA's Space Shuttle orbiter facing right, isolated against a plain white background. The fuselage is sliced open like an educational model to reveal its dense internal architecture. At the nose, the forward landing gear and pressurized crew compartment are visible, labeled as flight deck on top and middeck below, with small cockpit windows. The white exterior bears the inscription «United States» along the side, an American flag and black «USA» lettering on the wing. The vast payload bay dominates the center, shown open and holding a cylindrical module with internal compartments. A jointed manipulator arm extends from its sill. Toward the aft, three main engines with large bell nozzles and orbital maneuvering engines are exposed. The vertical tail displays the rudder and speed brake. Underneath and within the wings, bundles of wiring, tanks and the main landing gear are rendered. Thin leader lines with English labels point to parts such as elevons, body flap, hydrazine tanks and fuel cells. The palette is mostly white, metallic gray and thermal black, with warm ochre and blue accents on machinery, rendered with precise technical shading that emphasizes depth and metallic texture.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the full white silhouette, then move inward through the cutaway into the payload bay, the habitable void at the core of the vehicle. Follow the label lines from nose to nozzles to see how every subsystem is packed into a spaceplane.
ContextContexto
The image is cataloged as «Space Shuttle Projects» by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), dated 2001-01-01, from the NASA Image and Video Library. It is a cutaway illustration with callouts that describes the orbiter as both the brains and heart of the Space Transportation System (STS). According to source data, the orbiter is about the size and weight of a DC-9 aircraft, carries up to seven crew in three cabin levels, features an 18.3 x 4.6 meter cargo bay for satellites and laboratories, and has three main engines at the rear. The medium is listed as photography / scientific image. No individual illustrator is named beyond the NASA/MSFC credit.

Curious detailDato curioso
The shuttle's payload bay, shown open at the center, was large enough to hold a full tour bus and still have room for the robotic arm alongside it.

I pause on how this illustration opens the shuttle like a body to reveal its internal anatomy. I see the white fuselage contrasted with thermal black and metallic gray, and the ochre and blue touches of the machinery. The English labels point to each system with fine lines. The cutaway reveals the flight deck on top and the mid deck below, and the huge cargo bay with its cylindrical module. It is a didactic image that preserves the clarity of technical drawing.

I always dreamed of seeing inside the orbiter that formed the heart of the Space Transportation System. Here I see it floating on a white background, with the United States lettering and the flag on its back. I can pick out the three main engines at the rear, the rudder and speed brake on the tail, and the manipulator arm extended from the 18.3 by 4.6 meter cargo bay. The cutaway shows the pressurized cabin for up to seven crew members and makes me imagine each mission deploying satellites.

It looks like a giant white airplane that someone opened like a toy to see what is inside. It faces to the right as if flying with no sky. On top it has tiny windows where astronauts sit and below another little house for more crew. In the middle there is a huge open belly with a tube with little doors and a long arm that looks like a robot. In the back it has three big trumpets that are the engines. I like searching for the hidden little wheels of the landing gear.
