What you would seeLo que verías

A low, wide basketry bowl photographed frontally at a slight angle against a neutral gray background. The body is rounded with thick walls and a rolled, continuous rim that forms a distinct inner lip. In the foreground, the exterior shows a tightly coiled weave with horizontal rows of tiny, even stitches in straw beige and pale honey tones; the texture is granular and tactile, almost like overlapping scales. At the center, a geometric motif in dark reddish brown stands out: two elongated triangles facing each other and split apart, with stepped points forming diamonds and smaller peaks at the top and bottom. The interior, visible through the open mouth, repeats the light color and reveals the concentric weave of the bowl's base, with the rim decorated by an alternating dark and light pattern. Soft, even lighting models the volume, casts a faint shadow beneath the base, and highlights the matte sheen of the plant fibers. There is no handle or lid; the scale suggests a hand-held object, both utilitarian and ornamental, with very precise and symmetrical craftsmanship.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Notice first the wide, low volume and how light reveals each row of stitches. Then find the dark diamond-shaped design at the center: see how its triangles break and mirror each other, shifting the reading from a solid figure to two facing halves.

ContextContexto

Work identified by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Bowl from the Washoe culture of the Great Basin, dated 1890, late 19th to early 20th century. Maker unknown. Technique recorded as redbud and willow fibers, coiled over three rods, characteristic of Washoe basketry. It belongs to the Art of the Americas department and was presented by William Albert Price in memory of Mrs. William Albert Price. The museum provides no further description, so specific use or weaver is not documented.

Curious detailDato curioso

Washoe basketry is renowned for its degikup weave, so tight and fine that some bowls can hold water, and for the use of redbud root to achieve the reddish-brown hues of the pattern.

I focus on the technique: redbud and willow fibers coiled over three rods, a very demanding method. Each stitch is tiny, regular, almost like tiny scales forming tight horizontal rows. I notice the rolled rim that creates a continuous lip and the matte sheen of the beige and honey surface. The dark reddish brown geometric pattern is impeccable, perfectly symmetrical. I wonder about the hands that made it and how this precise work has been preserved since 1890.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see constellations in this bowl. The central motif looks like two facing triangles with stepped points, like mirrored mountains or connected stars. The smaller diamonds and peaks remind me of sky maps read at night. And the interior shows concentric circles, like orbits growing from the center. It is a handheld object, with no handle or lid, yet it holds a geometry that could help with orientation, to remember stories under an open Great Basin sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant little nest for my marbles. It is short and wide, and if you touch it it would feel scratchy like pineapple scales. I like the dark brown drawing in the middle, it is like two arrows with little teeth trying to touch each other. Inside it looks light with little dashes on the rim, as if someone painted very carefully without going outside the lines. I imagine they kept yummy things or tiny treasures in there, because it fits right in your hands.
