What you would seeLo que verías

Against a completely black background stands a small devotional tabernacle, photographed frontally and lit to emphasize its relief. The dark brown frame, arched at the top, is richly carved with plant scrolls, floral ornaments on the side pilasters, Corinthian capitals, egg-and-dart molding, and a leafy finial at the crown. Along the base runs the carved inscription MARIA MATER GRATIAE. Inside the shallow, warm-brown niche, the Virgin stands full-length in glazed terracotta. She wears a deep, glossy blue mantle with a green lining over a purple-maroon dress with a white neckline and yellow details; her pale yellow shoes peek out beneath the hem. A white veil covers part of her blond hair, and a flat yellow halo rises behind her head. Her face and hands are matte, pale, and unglazed, with downcast eyes and a quiet expression. On her left arm she holds the nude Christ Child, also with matte skin, curly blond hair, and a yellow halo, partly wrapped in a small white cloth. The Child sits turned toward the viewer while the Virgin supports his body with both hands. The scale feels intimate, like an object made for close, private contemplation.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the contrast between the glossy blue mantle and the matte, unglazed skin. Then look at how the Virgin supports the Child while their gazes do not meet. Finally read the inscription at the base and notice how the dark frame turns a small sculpture into a miniature altar.

ContextContexto

The Cleveland Museum of Art dates this glazed terracotta Virgin and Child to 1500-1510 and lists it under Benedetto Buglioni (1461-1521), an Italian sculptor probably trained in the workshop of Andrea della Robbia, where he would have learned the della Robbia family's glazing techniques. The source notes that, unlike other works by Buglioni, the faces here are less expressive and the exposed skin was left unglazed. Allan Marquand attributed the piece to Buglioni in 1921, based on its facial type, but that attribution has since been questioned. The tabernacle frame is probably contemporary, although it may not have been made specifically for these figures. Its exact original use is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The exposed skin of the Virgin and Child was deliberately left unglazed, so the matte flesh stands out against the shiny, enamel-like clothing and halos.

What holds my attention is the unglazed skin of the Virgin and Child, matte and pale, so different from the shine of the intense blue mantle and its green lining. That contrast was intentional and helps us tell the hand-modeled surface from the glazed areas. I notice the white veil over blond hair and the brownish purple dress, all preserved with a sheen that speaks of the technique learned in the della Robbia workshop. The black photo background lets us see every relief as if we were in the studio.

That black background makes me think of a starless night where a small portable altar suddenly lights up. I am drawn to the two flat yellow halos, like quiet suns marking the Virgin and Child without extra light. The shape of the tabernacle with its arch and pilasters with Corinthian capitals feels like a tiny observatory for close looking. Everything is lit for intimate wonder, not for a public square, like a domestic constellation meant for private contemplation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The Virgin looks very calm and she holds the Child in her arms as if she is keeping him from falling. The Child is almost without clothes, just with a little white cloth, and his hair is curly and blond like little curls. I like her shiny blue cloak that is green inside, and her little yellow shoes peeking out below. Behind their heads there are two little yellow wheels that shine. Everything is inside a little house with an arch that says MARIA MATER GRATIAE.
