What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, against a seamless background that shifts from near-black gray at the top to lighter gray below, sits a wide, low bowl seen in three-quarter view and slightly from above. It rests on a short, flared ring foot, with a soft shadow beneath it that gives a sense of its modest scale and weight. The body expands from the foot into a rounded lower half, then rises in a straighter upper wall ending in a thin, even rim. The dominant color is a warm, creamy off-white, stained in places with pale tan and faint gray. A deep cobalt blue rings the rim and bleeds irregularly downward in short drips, darkest at the edge. Just below, around the upper wall, runs a decorated band: incised scalloped arches containing clusters of small pierced holes arranged as downward triangles and tiny rosettes. The holes look dim rather than open because glaze fills them. Similar punctured patterns show through on the inside of the rim, barely visible from this angle. The lower body is almost undecorated. The surface appears matte and slightly grainy, with fine imperfections, subtle discoloration, and a soft, diffuse studio light that reveals the gentle thickness of the walls without harsh reflections.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the cobalt rim, then follow the small pierced triangles and rosettes around the upper wall. Notice that those holes do not go all the way through: the glaze fills them and turns them into dim, translucent points. Finally, look at the contrast between this decorated band and the almost plain lower body resting on its short foot.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this footed bowl was made by an unknown maker in Iran, probably Kashan, in the late 12th to early 13th century, during the Seljuq period. It is fritware, a ceramic body made largely with ground quartz, decorated with piercing and underglaze painting. Iranian potters used this technique to suggest translucency: the perforations in the wall were sealed with glaze. Below the blue rim, triangles and rosettes decorate incised scallops. The source notes that the footed form derives from Iranian metal bowls. Its exact original use is not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
The tiny holes are not for draining or straining: once filled with transparent glaze and fired, they would glow faintly when light passed through the wall of the bowl.

I focus on what you cannot see at first glance: this creamy white is not common clay, it is fritware, a paste made largely of ground quartz that potters in Kashan used to imitate porcelain. Look at the cobalt blue rim, how it drips in irregular little drops, a sign of underglaze painting. And those triangles and rosettes are not just pattern, they are tiny pierced holes sealed by the transparent glaze to suggest lightness without letting liquid escape. The matte, slightly grainy surface speaks of centuries and a careful kiln.

To me this bowl is a portable sky from the Seljuq period, late 12th to early 13th century. The white interior feels like a pale moon and the cobalt blue rim is the deep firmament around it. The pierced rosettes and openwork triangles under the scalloped arches remind me of ordered constellations, little points of light letting brightness through. It is modest in scale, yet its play of transparency and opacity, with glaze sealing the holes, makes me think of eclipses and of what is revealed and hidden.

It looks like a little deep plate for ice cream but with a tiny foot underneath as if it were wearing little shoes. It is creamy white with a very strong blue painted edge that drips like when you stain yourself with a marker. Around it has a band with little triangles and tiny flowers that are holes covered with shine, like little windows that do not open. I like to imagine that if you put water with light inside you would see the little stars. It is low, light and looks very delicate, to be used very carefully.
