Among Thorns: A Woman Half-Hidden by Autumn LeavesEntre espinas: una mujer semiescondida por hojas otoñales

color lithograph

What you would seeLo que verías

The composition is dominated by a thick bramble stem running diagonally from the lower left corner toward the upper right. It has visible thorns, branching twigs and many reddish-brown, dusty-rose and copper leaves that partly conceal the figure behind it. Against a flat, pale yellow-cream background, with no landscape or depth, a young woman emerges from behind the foliage. Her very light skin occupies the center and lower right. She wears a white camisole with lace trim, thin straps and a small pale-blue bow on the chest; one shoulder is bare and part of her bust is visible. Her long, wavy brown hair blows or flows horizontally to the left, mixing with fine curling tendrils. Her head is tilted upward, her face shown in three-quarter view with a full chin, parted lips, heavy eyelids and a gaze directed out of the image. She has a small dark mole below her lip. The drawing uses smooth brown outlines and flat color with almost no shadow, giving the paper a soft, matte quality. In the lower right corner appears the signature “Henry Detouche.” A thinner thorny stem with leaves rises along the right edge, framing her.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the large diagonal stem from corner to corner, then notice how it separates you from the woman. Look at her face and at the blue bow on her chest: the calm of both contrasts with the thorns and tangled leaves around her.

ContextContexto

In the Brambles (Dans les Ronces), dated 1898, is a color lithograph by French artist Henri Detouche (1854–1913). It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived through the Bequest of Elizabeth Carroll Shearer. In late nineteenth-century France, color lithography flourished in posters, illustrated publications and collectible prints, closely linked to the sinuous, plant-inspired lines of Art Nouveau. Here, that language is clear in the flowing hair, flat areas of color and fused figure and vegetation. No specific model, place of printing or narrative source is recorded in the information provided; the scene is probably a symbolic or decorative fantasy rather than an identifiable episode.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: although thorny stems pass almost against her skin and clothing, there is not a single scratch on her body. The brambles function more like a dreamlike veil or decoration than a real, dangerous thicket.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Is the woman trapped in the brambles, hiding behind them, or emerging calmly from them?¿La mujer está atrapada en la zarza, se esconde tras ella o sale de ella con calma?
  2. How does the reading change when you notice that the thorns never wound her skin?¿Cómo cambia la lectura al notar que las espinas nunca hieren su piel?
  3. What effect does the contrast produce between the sensual, delicate clothing and the rough, autumnal vegetation?¿Qué efecto produce el contraste entre la ropa íntima y delicada y la vegetación áspera y otoñal?

I focus on the technique: an 1898 color lithograph with flat inks and soft brown outlines on matte paper. The pale cream-yellow background is completely flat, with no depth, so the figure and the bramble seem to float like a poster. Notice how the reddish and copper leaves gently cover the very pale skin and the white camisole with lace and a pale blue bow. There is almost no shading for volume; the rhythm comes from line. At the lower right you can still read the signature Henry Detouche, well preserved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this bramble as a constellation crossing the pale cream-yellow sky diagonally, from the lower left to the upper right. The thorns are like small sharp stars, the reddish leaves are autumnal nebulae half-veiling the figure. She, with her brown hair stretched horizontally, seems to float in orbit, with heavy lids and a gaze lost outside the frame. That thin stem along the right edge frames her like a ring. Everything is flat, with no horizon, like looking at a decorative firmament.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This lady is playing hide and seek! The thorny bramble with lots of red and pink leaves is right in front of her and only lets us see part of her. She wears a little white top with lace and a tiny pale blue bow, and her long brown hair goes to one side as if the wind were pulling it. Her head is tilted up and her mouth is a little open, like she is sighing. Did you see the tiny beauty mark under her lip? I think she is trying not to get pricked by the thorns.
