What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is photographed from directly above against a very pale gray ground, its two cream-colored pages filling almost the entire frame. A soft vertical seam runs down the middle where the pages meet, and the slightly worn outer edges and thin page block are visible at the sides. Most of both pages is empty. Slightly right of center, a pomegranate branch is printed in black and diluted gray ink. A thin, bare twig enters diagonally from the upper left, bends sharply, thickens, and continues downward, becoming darker and more angular. Near the top right, a small cluster of pointed leaves hangs from a delicate stem. The main fruit sits below the center, split open into two rounded, swelling halves flecked with dark spots. Between them, a cluster of small, pale, tightly packed seeds is drawn with fine outlines, lighter than everything around it. Broad leaves, made from single washed brushstrokes that fade from charcoal to smoke gray, fan out beneath and beside the fruit. At the bottom, a short gnarled branch breaks off into dry, scratchy marks. The paper looks matte, fibrous, and aged, with faint stains and uneven toning, especially near the fold and corners.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the wide empty space, then let your eye travel down the thin branch toward the fruit. Look closely at the pale seeds at the center: they are the lightest, most detailed passage and change the whole image from a branch study into a moment of ripeness and opening.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as *Pomegranate*, from the *Ōkyo Picture Book*, associated with Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795), a Japanese artist of the Edo period (1615–1868). The Cleveland Museum of Art dates this object to 1850 and describes it as an accordion-style woodblock-printed folding book, in ink and color on paper, from the Kelvin Smith Collection. Because Ōkyo died in 1795, this is probably a posthumous edition printed from his designs rather than a book he printed himself; the source does not explain the exact production. Ōkyo is generally known for close observation of nature, a concern clearly present in this spare fruit study.

Curious detailDato curioso

The museum dates this book to 1850, fifty-five years after Ōkyo's death in 1795—a reminder that a woodblock book could keep an artist's designs in circulation long after his lifetime.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the large amount of empty paper do to the way we notice a single fruit?¿Qué efecto tiene tanto papel vacío en la manera de mirar un solo fruto?
  2. Why might an artist show the pomegranate exactly at the moment it splits open?¿Por qué mostrar la granada justo en el momento en que se abre?
  3. How does this image change when you remember it belongs to a folding book meant to be handled and unfolded, not framed on a wall?¿Cómo cambia la imagen cuando recuerdas que forma parte de un libro plegable, pensado para tomarse con las manos y desplegarse, y no para colgarse en una pared?

I pause on the creamy paper, matte and fibrous, with its slightly worn edges and the soft central fold joining the two pages. You can see time passing in the faint spots and uneven tone. The woodblock printing in black and diluted gray ink is very controlled: the broad leaves with washes from charcoal to smoke gray, the knotty branch with dry strokes, and the open fruit with its pale seeds. Since it is an accordion-fold book, I think about how to protect such a simple and delicate structure.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me is the emptiness. Most of the two cream pages is empty and that makes the pomegranate branch seem to float, like a lonely planet. The open pomegranate at the center, with its two swollen halves and the cluster of tightly packed seeds, reminds me of a constellation seen through a magnifier. Ōkyo observed nature as I observe the sky: with patience, noticing every dark spot, every pointed leaf, every fine line that reveals a small world.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The pomegranate looks like it exploded! It is open into two round puffy halves and in the middle it has lots of pale little seeds all bunched together. I like that almost the whole page is empty and there is just a skinny little twig coming in crooked from the top that then gets thicker and darker. The leaves at the bottom look painted with dirty water, from light gray to dark gray. And at the very bottom there is a rough and knotty little branch, like the plant's little tail. It looks soft and old.
