It is the left-hand page; on the far right, only a narrow sliver of the next leaf appears. To the left, the fore-edge of many stacked leaves is visible, yellowed and uneven, conveying the volume's weight and thickness. The support is cream-colored vellum, matte and slightly irregular, with soft wrinkles in the lower half, fine folds, and small brown stains. Near the binding, a vertical translucent strip runs the height of the page, probably a later repair or reinforcement. In the upper left corner there is a diffuse purplish patch, like colour showing through from the other side. The text, in Greek, occupies most of the page in dense lines of brown ink, written in a small, slanted, tightly packed hand. Some passages stand out in larger lettering, also slanted and darker in tone. Along the left margin, enlarged initials in reddish brown protrude from the block of text and open new sections. Fine strokes, corrections, and small marks crowd between the lines. The lighting is even, with no harsh shadows, and reveals the surface's fibrous, worn texture.","contexto":"This is folio 315, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made around 1000–1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The author and the scribes are unknown. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The museum notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, images of the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page, however, is devoted almost entirely to commentary text.","como_mirarla":"First, follow the dense block of writing from top to bottom and notice how regular it becomes. Then look at the left margin, where larger initials interrupt that order and mark new sections. Finally, look for the wrinkles, the translucent repair strip, and the marks showing through from the other side: the page is also a record of the passage of time.","dato_curioso":"Although this folio looks plain, the full book has 428 leaves, and each of its four Gospels opened with a richly illuminated page decorated with peacocks and fountains.","preguntas":["What does it change in our experience of a sacred text when reading it depends on hundreds of hand-copied pages?","What can the corrections, enlarged initials, and changes in the size of the hand tell us about how this book was used?","Why preserve the wrinkles, stains, and repairs instead of imagining the page as it looked when it was new?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 315 (vuelto), de un Evangeliario con comentarios","se_ve":"Una sola página de un libro antiguo y grueso ocupa casi toda la imagen, vista desde arriba sobre un fondo gris oscuro. I pause on what is not read but seen through touch.
