What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open, bound volume photographed from above against a dark gray ground, with almost the entire right-hand page visible and only a narrow strip of the facing page at the left. The page is aged vellum, cream and ivory in tone, with irregular, slightly wavy edges, brownish staining, and a worn surface. At the lower right there is a large, diffuse damp-looking stain; there are also smaller dark spots, yellowing along the margins, and areas where the skin appears creased or lightly polished by handling. In the upper right corner, the number “245” is written in a faded hand. Most of the page is filled with Greek handwriting in brown ink, with some words or marks in a more reddish tone. The writing forms two distinct blocks: in the upper half the letters are larger, rounder, and more widely spaced, arranged in about fourteen lines; below, the script becomes much smaller, denser, and more compressed, with many lines filling the rest of the page. At the left margin there are small protruding markers or letters, and faint traces of gold or a heading can be seen near the top. The thick stack of leaves is visible along the right and bottom edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the contrast between the two blocks of writing and notice how the change in scale organizes the page. Then move to the edges: the stains, the folio number, and the small marginal signs show that this was a book made to be used, not only admired. Notice that, although the volume contains illuminated openings, this folio relies on handwriting alone.
ContextContexto
This is folio 245 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek and is made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—principally peacocks—and fountains. The author is unknown. On this particular folio, no large illumination is visible; the page is devoted to handwritten text.

Curious detailDato curioso
In this manuscript, peacocks at the openings of the Gospels symbolized the immortality of the soul, and fountains represented the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul.

I pause at this vellum in cream and ivory tones, with wavy edges and brownish stains that speak of its age. At the bottom right there is a large diffuse moisture mark and tiny dark specks across the surface. I am moved by the block of Greek text in brown ink with reddish touches, larger and spaced in about fourteen lines on top and very small and dense below. The number 245 at the top and the thickness of the volume remind us it is an object used and cherished for centuries.

I see this page as one looks at an ancient sky full of constellations. The Greek text in brown ink forms two universes, large scattered stars in about fourteen lines above and a dense Milky Way of tiny script below. The moisture stains and yellowing are like nebulae that have crossed time. The number 245 in the corner is our coordinate and the dark gray background makes the cream vellum stand out like a planet lit up at night.

This book looks very old and wrinkly like my grandma's skin. It is cream colored with little brown spots and a big stain at the bottom as if water spilled on it. It has lots of funny little letters in Greek with brown ink and a bit of red. On top the letters are big and spaced out and below they are tiny and all crowded together. In the little corner it says 245 and it looks chubby on the side where all the pages are together. I wonder who read it before.
