What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is seen from above, slightly angled, against a dark gray, almost flat background. The right-hand page fills most of the image; only a narrow strip of the left page is visible at the edge, also written on. The support is vellum of a warm, aged cream color, with irregular edges, soft stains, and a slightly wavy surface. Dense Greek handwriting in brown, at times reddish, ink covers the center in several blocks separated by wider blank gaps. The lines are fairly regular and the letters small, rounded, and closely set, creating a compact textural mass. In the middle, a section in noticeably finer, lighter script seems to interrupt the main text. Large initials stand out here and there, extending into the margin. At the top are faded headings and traces of color, perhaps purple and ochre. In the upper right corner the number '158' appears in pencil or pale ink. The margins draw the eye for another reason: there are several small dark-edged holes or burns, smudged ink spots, and later annotations. Along the right side the thickness of the bound volume can be seen, with many stacked leaves. Light is soft and even, revealing the grain of the skin and the wear of almost a thousand years.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the main block of writing from top to bottom and notice how orderly the page remains despite its age. Then look at the margins: the small holes, stains, and faded notes change it from an abstract text into an object handled for centuries. Finally, compare the two sizes of script to sense that not everything on the page carries the same weight.
ContextContexto
This is folio 158 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written and decorated with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The exact scribe or illuminator is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
The complete volume has 428 leaves, so this single quiet text page belongs to a very large book in which the most colorful decoration was reserved for the openings of the four Gospels.

I pause on the skin, that warm creamy vellum with irregular edges and visible grain. I see soft stains, later annotations and those little dark-rimmed holes, perhaps burns, that tell of almost a thousand years of use. The brown and sometimes reddish ink forms dense blocks of Greek, with large initials spilling into the margin. I am moved by the strip of finer, lighter script that interrupts the main text, like a different whisper. Everything speaks of time, monastic hands and constant care.

I see this folio like a night sky seen from above. The creamy page is a bright vault and the Greek letters are stars clustered tightly into dense constellations. The pale gaps between text blocks are luminous voids, and the stains and little burnt holes look like tiny meteors that passed through the paper. It fascinates me that this Byzantine book, almost a thousand years old, still expands before us like a galaxy of ink, with 428 stacked leaves waiting to be explored with patience.

It looks like a giant open book someone left half done. On one side you can barely see anything, on the other it is super full of tiny brown letters that look like little ants lined up in rows. I like to find the big letters that stick out from the line as if they want to escape. I also see little stains and holes on the edge, as if the book got a little burnt. You can tell it is very very old, from many many years ago, and that it has lots of tightly packed pages.
