What you would seeLo que verías
A herbarium sheet occupies almost the entire frame against a plain, light background. Seven fragments of dried palm lie on cream-colored card, yellowed with age and flecked with tiny dark specks. At top left, a long slender stem ends in a drooping cluster of small, round, wrinkled fruit, dark brown and black. Below it follow several fan-shaped leaves: yellowish-green, brittle-looking, split into stiff narrow segments radiating from a single point like an open hand fan. Some are seen from the front, others from the back, paler and almost silvery. At the center and lower right, small insects — flies or wasps with fine wings — rest on the leaves, likely trapped or attracted during preparation. Bottom right, a printed label with typed and handwritten text identifies the species and collectors; a barcode and institutional stamps were added later. The light is even, archival, and reveals every fiber, vein, and fold of the dried tissue.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, look for the insects: they are not painted in, they are part of what remains of the plants. Then find the names and ask who those names made visible — and who they left out.

ContextContexto
Herbarium sheet with seven specimens of *Coccothrinax argentata*, a fan palm native to Florida, the Bahamas, and parts of the Caribbean. It was collected and prepared by Mary Morris Vaux and Margaret Neilson Armstrong, whose names appear on the label — something still uncommon for women naturalists of the period. The sheet preserves original field annotations with morphological observations, typical of the systematic botany of the early 20th century. The source provides no exact date; it was likely produced in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is now preserved at The New York Botanical Garden.

Hoy se conserva en The New York Botanical Garden.

Curious detailDato curioso
*Coccothrinax argentata* is known as the silver palm, because the underside of its leaves has silvery hairs that reflect sunlight and reduce water loss — an adaptation to coastal sun and wind.

If you look closely you will see seven pressed fragments of this palm, not a single complete leaf. I love how time shows on the creamy card, yellowed with age and dotted with dark specks, yet the fibers remain intact. Notice the contrast between the yellowish green front and the almost silvery back, which is why it is called argentata. The wrinkled black fruits at the top and the tiny insects left on the leaves remind me this was once a living being handled with careful hands.

These fan-shaped leaves remind me of constellations. Each rigid segment radiates from a central point like rays of light, like a tiny solar system spread on the card. Up top, the cluster of dark fruits looks like a swarm of little planets hanging from a stem that acts as an orbit. And that smooth, pale background is like the night sky of an archive, revealing every vein as if they were lines drawn to map the plant universe.

They look like seven magic fans squished flat! Some are yellowish green and others shine silvery on the back, as if they had frost on them. At the top there is a bunch of wrinkled black balls like little raisins hanging from a stick. If you look closely you will find tiny flies with see-through wings napping on the leaves, stuck right there. I like to imagine someone arranged them one by one so they would not fly away and we could count them.
