At the center, a plain arched doorway opens into a shaded passage; a distant patch of light, stairs, and another small arch can barely be seen through it. Above the arch is a dense carved panel: in the middle, a fierce mask-like face crowns two curving forms that descend like a mustache or a pair of trunks toward two fantastic animals facing the opening. On either side sit two dark, richly dressed figures with tall headdresses, raised arms, and round ornaments, set among flowers and large scrolls that curl like waves. Below, flanking the doorway, two slim standing figures are carved in stone in low relief; each raises one arm holding an object over the head, wears a pointed headdress and a long skirt, and stands almost symmetrically. Between them and the door are columns covered in minute floral patterns and small animals at the base. In the foreground, worn stone steps lead up to the threshold, and at the bottom lies a flat semicircular carved stone on the ground. The contrast between the pale plaster, deep shadow, and dark carving gives the surface a weathered, dusty texture. At the lower edge, printed text identifies the place and the studio.","contexto":"This albumen print from a glass plate negative, taken around 1880, is attributed to Scowen & Co., a British studio active in Ceylon between 1876 and 1895. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it probably shows the entrance to the grounds devoted to Natha, regarded in Ceylon as a counterpart of Avalokitesvara, the Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva of universal compassion. The shrine in Kandy was considered an especially auspicious and sacred place, and some royal ceremonies were held there, including the naming of new kings. The exact identification of the gate is not confirmed, hence the source's use of “probably.”","como_mirarla":"Start with the dark archway at the center, then let your eye rise to the crowded carved panel above it. Afterwards, compare the two standing guardians at the sides and finish at the semicircular stone on the ground, which marks the act of entering.","dato_curioso":"Albumen prints were made by coating paper with egg white and silver salts; that smooth coating helped produce the fine detail and warm sepia tones visible in 19th-century photographs such as this one.","preguntas":["How does the contrast between the empty, dark archway and the profusion of carving around it shape the feeling of crossing this threshold?","What different traditions or visual languages seem to meet in the figures above and beside the door?","How does a 19th-century British studio photograph transform a sacred site into an image for distant viewers?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Entrada a los terrenos del Nata Dewale, Kandy, hacia 1880","se_ve":"Fotografía vertical en tonos sepia que muestra de frente la entrada de un templo, ocupando casi todo el encuadre. The dark arch is like an eclipse framing another glow in the distance, with steps rising toward the light.
