mezzotint on chine collé
What you would seeLo que verías
A very wide, low panoramic print in velvety blacks, warm greys and sepia on cream paper, surrounded by broad white margins. In the immediate foreground a grassy slope falls away, filled with dense, almost black tree canopies like ink blots; a few thin, twisting trunks and small pale gaps of meadow show between them. At lower left the hillside is lighter, scratched and sketchy. In the middle distance, at right, a large classical complex with two domed towers rises above the trees, its facades modelled in soft grey. To its left a bright band — the River Thames — catches the light, with masts and low industrial shapes at far left. Beyond, the land flattens into a hazy plain where tiny spires, chimneys and a distant dome dissolve at the horizon. The upper half is mostly sky: layered clouds, darker at the edges, with a pale glow near the centre. The surface has the grainy, smoky texture of mezzotint, no hard outlines. Beneath the image, centred, is a line of small printed text, and at lower right the artist's signature in pencil, faint against the margin.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the black trees in the foreground, then let your eye travel toward the light of the river and the domes on the right. Notice how the city almost dissolves into the horizon: London is present, yet it remains distant. The wide white margin and the low signature heighten that sense of distance.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is *London from Greenwich*, dated 1904, a mezzotint on chine collé held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, bequest of John L. Severance. The sheet is credited to Frank Short (1857-1945), Peter De Wint (1784-1849) and Robert Dunthorne, London. Because De Wint died more than half a century earlier, it is probably a print by Short after a composition by De Wint, published in London. The view looks from the elevated greenery of Greenwich toward the Thames and far-off London, with the twin domes characteristic of Greenwich on the right; the exact identification of every distant building is not recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Mezzotint is worked from dark to light: the plate is first roughened all over so it would print almost black, and the highlights are then burnished smooth — which is why the clouds and the river here have that soft, sooty glow instead of hard lines.

I am drawn to the smoky, granular texture that only mezzotint can give, working from dark to light, seen here in velvety blacks and warm grays on cream paper with chine collé. Notice the wide white margins and the faint pencil signature at the lower right, so delicate we must protect it from light. The trees are almost ink blots with thin twisting trunks, and the sky is burnished from the plate to lift that pale glow in the center among darker layered clouds.

This sky fascinates me because it fills almost half the print, with layered clouds darker at the edges and a pale glow at the center that seems to spill light over the haze. From the Greenwich height the view opens toward the Thames, that luminous band reflecting the sky, and toward a plain where spires and chimneys dissolve. It is a panorama that makes you imagine how light shifts at dusk and how the atmosphere softens and erases the distant outlines of the city.

It feels like I am lying on the grass looking down a giant slide of a hillside with trees that look like big black paint blots. Some little trunks are all twisty and there are pale patches where the sun peeks through. On the right there is a big building with two round hats like domes and far away there is a shiny stripe that is the river with tiny sticks that are boats. Up top everything is sky with fluffy clouds and a little light in the middle.
