What you would seeLo que verías

The horizontal print, in very pale sepia tones, sits in the centre of a wide ivory paper margin, with its title printed below in capital letters. In the left third rises an Islamic funerary complex dominated by a tall, slender minaret of stacked tiers, carved balconies and a pointed finial, beside a large ribbed dome. Clustered at its foot are walls, arches, smaller domes and stone buildings at several levels, some of them looking partly ruined. On the far left a thick, eroded wall is cut off by the edge of the image; to the right the view opens towards lesser buildings, another distant dome and, blurred on the horizon, the silhouette of the Citadel on raised ground. The foreground is an empty, uneven sandy plain, drawn with fine lines and soft shading that suggest dust, stones and shallow dips. At lower right, four small figures in long robes, their heads covered, sit on the ground talking or resting beside low tombs with upright markers. Their tiny scale stresses the monumentality of the architecture. The sky fills almost the upper half, nearly white, with clouds only faintly indicated. Along the bottom are handwritten signatures at both sides and the publisher's line in the centre.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the minaret and follow its vertical line down to the dome and the walls below. Then move across the empty foreground to the small seated figures on the right; their scale changes the architecture from a backdrop into a monument. Finally, look toward the hazy horizon, where the citadel nearly dissolves into the sky.

Curious detailDato curioso

David Roberts travelled through Egypt and the Near East in 1838–1839 making drawings on the spot; back in Britain, Louis Haghe translated many of them into the large lithographs that made Roberts famous with the Victorian public.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the material and technique. This is an 1848 color lithograph in very pale sepia tones on ivory paper, printed in London by F. G. Moon. I see Louis Haghe's fine linework after David Roberts and the wide margin that frames and protects the image. Notice the suggested wear on walls and domes, with soft shadows shaping the stone. The sandy foreground is full of subtle tonal shifts. We do not know for certain which exact tomb is shown, and that uncertainty is also preserved as part of its history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at the sky filling almost the upper half, nearly white with just hinted clouds, as if desert air has dissolved all contrast. That pale palette makes the tall, slender minaret with its carved balconies and pointed finial, and the large ribbed dome stand out sharply. In the distance, blurred on the horizon, the citadel can be glimpsed on a rise. The light seems to come from high above, without harsh shadows, leaving the sandy, dusty esplanade in a calm and luminous contemplation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This empty esplanade looks huge to me, like a sandy yard where everything echoes. On the right there are four tiny people in long robes sitting beside small tombs with upright stones. They look so little next to the super tall minaret and the enormous dome! On the left there is a thick, rough wall that seems to cut the edge of the picture. I like to imagine walking there and watching my shadow stretch over the dust while I search for another dome far away.
