What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, vertical color lithograph shows a sunlit street in Cairo framed by buildings on both sides. On the left, a massive facade of alternating pale and reddish-brown stone bands rises beyond the top edge; it features arched openings, carved details, and projecting wooden balconies with latticework. On the right, a lighter building combines a stone ground floor with horseshoe arches and a dark wooden upper story, from which large white and gray cloths hang and billow slightly over a balcony. In the center background stands a lower building with double arches and balconies, crowned by a tower with a small ribbed dome and arched openings, set against a pale gray, almost empty sky. The lower third is an open, dusty plaza in beige and ochre tones where dozens of small figures in long robes, cloaks, and turbans or head coverings gather in groups: some stand talking, others sit on the ground or on low benches, and a few walk across. In the immediate foreground, two children appear at lower left, one standing and one seated beside small objects on the ground. The light is soft and diffuse, with few harsh shadows, and the fine lithographic line renders stone, wood, fabric, and dust in warm, restrained tones.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the vertical buildings closing in on both sides, then move toward the tower in the center and the small crowd below. Notice how the white cloths on the right break up the sandy palette. Look closely at the foreground: the smallest figures give the architecture its true scale.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this color lithograph from 1848 forms part of Egypt and Nubia, Volume III. It was made by British lithographer Louis Haghe, published by F. G. Moon in London, and based on work by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864). Roberts traveled through Egypt and the Near East in the late 1830s, and his drawings were widely circulated in Britain through prints such as this one. The specific arrangement of the shops in the bazaar is not independently documented in the source record, so some details probably reflect a traveler's composed view rather than a strict documentary record.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the title naming the coppersmiths, no copper objects are clearly visible as the focus of the scene: the human gathering and the architecture take up far more space than any metalwork.

  2. How does the relationship between the monumental architecture and the small figures shape our sense of the place?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción del lugar por la relación entre la arquitectura monumental y las figuras pequeñas?
  3. If this same street were depicted by someone who worked there every day, what might change in the scene?

I pause on how the lithograph builds matter with ink. I see the dusty beige of the square contrasting with the bands of light and reddish brown stone on the left facade and the dark wood of the balcony on the right. The hanging white and gray cloths soften the hardness of the stone. The fine linework suggests dust, wood grain and carved arches. It is an 1848 color print after a drawing by David Roberts and lithographed by Louis Haghe for F. G. Moon in London.

I look at the pale gray and almost empty sky crowning the scene. There are no sharp clouds or stars, just a diffuse brightness that lights the square without harsh shadows, like a hazy morning. In the distance, the tower with a ribbed dome stands against that light background and works as an orientation point, almost like a marker on the urban horizon. The even light lets the warm ochre and brown tones of the buildings and dust dominate without strong contrasts.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like to imagine I am there walking barefoot on the beige dust. I see many people in long tunics and turbans chatting in small groups, some sitting on the ground. On the left there is a giant striped wall like a cake and on the right white sheets hang that seem to fly. In the back there is a tower with a dome like a little hat. Down on the left there are two children, one standing and one sitting, and I wonder what they are playing.
