What you would seeLo que verías
A wide landscape rendered entirely in shades of brown over cream paper, like an old sepia ink drawing. At lower right, in the foreground, a woman sits on the ground with her body turned and her hands at her chest, looking up. Before her stands a winged angel in loose robes, mid-stride, turning toward her and extending one arm toward the distance. Behind them rises a fragment of a ruined classical temple, with tall fluted columns and Corinthian capitals, partly wrapped by a gnarled, leaning tree whose dark trunk anchors the edge of the image. On the left, a dense mass of leafy trees in varied hatching fills half the scene. Below them, a herdsman with a raised staff and a small dog drives a line of cattle and sheep calmly along a path across the middle ground. In the background the land opens into a luminous valley with a river, tiny figures, a town with towers on a hill, tree-covered slopes and soft mountains beneath a broad cloudy sky streaked with fine lines and dotted with small birds in flight. Below the scene, a margin bears handwritten-style inscriptions identifying Claude, Earlom, Boydell, the date 1776 and number 133.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start on the right, with the angel and Hagar, then follow the angel's outstretched arm toward the cattle and the valley. Notice how the episode that gives the work its title occupies only a corner, while the landscape takes up almost everything. Then look for the tiny figures in the distance: they make the miracle feel like one event among many in a vast world.
ContextContexto
This is print No. 133 of the *Liber Veritatis*, published in London on 1 January 1776 by John Boydell, as stated in the inscription below the image. Richard Earlom made it after a drawing by Claude Lorrain, a French landscape painter of the 17th century, then in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire. Claude assembled the *Liber Veritatis* as a drawn record of his compositions. The scene illustrates Hagar, a biblical figure from Genesis who is comforted by an angel in the wilderness. The Cleveland Museum of Art, the source of this record, classifies it as an 18th-century English print made with etching and mezzotint printed in brown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Claude Lorrain compiled the *Liber Veritatis* in part to keep a record of his own compositions and to distinguish his works from copies and imitations; a century later, those drawings became the basis for Earlom's printed reproductions.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the technique of this engraving number 133. I see a print in brown tones on cream paper, that sepia effect achieved with etching and mezzotint described in the record. I notice how Earlom translates Claude Lorrain drawing with varied hatching for foliage and very fine lines for the streaked sky. I am drawn to the margin with calligraphic inscriptions naming Boydell and the date 1776, because it tells us about preservation, stable inks and a paper that remains luminous today.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I look up to that broad sky dominating the background. I love the streaked clouds made with fine parallel lines and those tiny dots that are birds in flight, graphic devices to suggest atmosphere. Below, the luminous valley opens with a river, a town with towers and soft mountains, as if light comes from the horizon. Even the intimate scene of Hagar and the angel under the ruins seems lit by that brightness that organizes the whole landscape.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
I first spotted the little animals. There are cows and sheep walking in a line along a path and a shepherd with a stick and a little dog guiding them, as if they are going for a walk. Above there is a winged angel talking to a lady sitting on the ground who looks sad. I like the big broken columns with a crooked tree and the dark forest on one side. In the distance you can see a little town with towers and tiny birds in the brown sky.
