What you would seeLo que verías
A wide, horizontal etching printed in dark brown ink on cream paper, with broad margins around the image. The upper half is an almost empty sky, rendered with very fine, wavy, restless horizontal lines that grow slightly denser towards the edges, suggesting thin cloud and diffused light. Below, a low horizon divides the scene: on the left, a dark, distant band of bushes and trees. The lower half is open countryside, covered with short, energetic strokes, cross-hatching and scribbled marks that imitate grass, furrows and uneven ground. In the centre, a pale, winding path, left almost white, recedes from the bottom edge towards the background. To the right of it stands the main group: several apple trees with twisted, light-coloured trunks, dense leafy canopies and some bare, angular branches reaching into the sky. Another smaller, leaning tree stands out alone on the far right, casting a strong shadow across the textured ground. To the left, two slimmer, taller trees rise in the middle distance. Almost hidden in the shade by the path, a tiny female figure in a dark skirt barely reaches the height of the lower branches. Below the image, the title 'POMMIERS À AUVERS' is printed, with a small signature at lower left.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the expanse of the sky and the low horizon, then follow the little path from the foreground toward the centre. Only then look for the tiny figure beside the trees: once you find her, the vast landscape suddenly gains a human scale. Finally, notice how the orchard's bare branches contrast with the dense, shady foliage.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is Apple Trees at Auvers (Pommiers à Auvers), an etching from 1877 by French artist Charles-François Daubigny (1817–1878), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of John Bonebrake. Daubigny, associated with the Barbizon School and regarded as a forerunner of Impressionism, settled in Auvers-sur-Oise in the 1860s and made its fields, rivers and orchards a recurring subject. Produced a year before his death, this print belongs to the 19th-century French revival of etching as an original art form, not merely a means of reproduction. No further details about this specific impression are given in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: although the work is titled Apple Trees, no apples are clearly visible; the fruit is suggested, at most, by the density of the foliage, and one tree is almost entirely bare.

Look closely and you will see this is not a pencil drawing but an etching printed in dark brown ink on cream paper with wide margins. I love how Daubigny uses different lines for each texture: thin wavy horizontals for the almost empty sky, cross-hatching and short scribbles for the grasses and uneven ground. He left the winding path almost blank so light can breathe, saving the darkest strokes for the distant band of shrubs and the shadows beneath the apple trees.

What draws me in most is that low horizon dividing the print into two halves. Above, the sky takes up almost half the space, worked with ultra-fine lines that suggest thin clouds and a soft diffuse light wrapping everything. That openness reminds me of stargazing from an open field with no obstacles. Below, the apple trees with pale twisted trunks stand out against that brightness, as if the sky itself were the quiet main character.

It looks like a path for getting lost while playing. The pale winding trail snakes through grass full of little strokes and leads you to apple trees with crooked trunks and branches like arms. One leans alone on the right and casts a big shadow. If you look carefully, beside the path there is a tiny lady with a dark skirt, almost hidden. I like to imagine she is going to pick apples and I am following her along the little white path.
