What you would seeLo que verías

The page shows a parchment folio framed as a small golden building, with classical columns at the sides, capitals, bases, and painted tassels hanging down the right margin. At the top, a red band reads officium defunctorum. Inside this architecture is a crowded banquet scene: on the left, a bearded man in a red hat and gold robe and a crowned woman in blue sit at a table covered with a white cloth, set with bread, dishes, a ewer, and a bowl. A servant behind them leans forward, while another at the right, in grey and orange clothing with a crutch and a pouch, holds out a bowl toward the table. In the foreground, a man in blue with a green hat and orange hose crouches and reaches toward a small white dog standing over a prone, brown-clad body on the floor. Through an opening in the upper right, against a blue landscape, a tiny figure reclines, apparently dead or ill. Below the image is Latin text in dark ink with small red and blue initials. At the lower left, a large decorated initial encloses red flowers and green leaves on a gold ground. The palette is rich and flat, with visible hand-coloring over printed lines, worn gold, and the creamy, slightly uneven surface of parchment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the white table and the abundance at the upper left, then follow the servant's bowl toward Lazarus standing at the right. Next, look down at the dog and the crouching figure, and finally notice the tiny second scene in the upper right corner. That contrast between the feast inside and exclusion outside structures the entire image.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is folio 73r, titled Lazarus, from a Printed Book of Hours (Use of Rome) made in Paris in 1510 by Guillaume Le Rouge (active 1493–1517). The volume has 112 printed folios on parchment and belongs to the Department of Medieval Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Books of Hours were prayer books for lay devotion, and this page opens the Office of the Dead, as indicated by the heading at the top. The image illustrates the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, a fitting subject before prayers for the dead. Although printed, it was hand-colored in imitation of illuminated manuscripts. Exactly who owned this copy is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A verifiable fact: the volume is printed on parchment, not paper, and its 112 folios were colored by hand, so each surviving copy of such an edition can differ in its final appearance.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on how this 1510 page pretends to be handwritten while being printed. I see printing on parchment hand-colored, with that creamy and slightly irregular surface and the worn golds of the architectural frame with columns, capitals and tassels hanging on the right margin. I notice the flat pigments: the red of the top band reading officium defunctorum, the small red and blue initials and the large initial with red flowers and green leaves on gold. Everything shows the care taken to imitate medieval illumination.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I look at the small spaces that open this banquet to the outside. At the top right there is an opening onto a blue landscape where a small reclining figure appears, seemingly dead or ill, contrasting with the table full of bread, jug and bowl. I like to think about how the artist separates two worlds: the golden closed interior of the rich man with the red cap and the woman crowned in blue, and the pale distant exterior. That little window is like a moral observatory on poverty and wealth.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like a little golden house with columns and tiny tassels hanging! Inside there is a party with bread and dishes, but outside there are sad people. I see a man with a crutch and a bag begging for food with his bowl, and another man lying on the ground in brown with a little white dog on him that seems to lick him. A man in blue with a green cap kneels to help. At the top it says officium defunctorum in red letters and at the bottom there is a giant letter with little red flowers. It is pretty and sad at the same time.
