Her black hair is arranged in a high, voluminous traditional coiffure secured with a long light-wood hairpin. She wears a black kimono patterned with fans in gold, muted green, burgundy and ivory, with a vivid red inner collar and a white under-collar framing her neck. In both hands she holds a long closed parasol with dark ribs and folded fabric in deep slate blue. Behind her, a strong diagonal of dark brown wood belongs to the shafts of a palanquin, whose lacquered body appears at lower left decorated with gold crests, vermilion red, green slats and blue trim, with ornate metal fittings. The background is filled with cherry branches in bloom, rendered in soft washes of pale pink, grey and white that dissolve into a creamy, pearly paper tone. On the right margin a vertical pink cartouche bears Japanese calligraphy, with a red seal and signature near the lower right. The light is soft and even, the paper texture appears matte and slightly fibrous, and the figure dominates the scale while the blossoms create a hazy, ephemeral halo around her.","contexto":"According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is Cherry Blossoms, from the series Brocades of Edo, made in 1903 by Ikeda Terukata (1883–1921) and published by Akiyama Buemon. It dates to the Meiji period (1868–1912) and is a woodblock print in ink and color on paper. It depicts a fashionably dressed woman with a parasol beside her ornate palanquin as she gazes at cherry blossoms. Along with his wife Ikeda Shoen, Terukata trained with Mizuno Toshikata and focused on images of beautiful women, exhibiting and winning prizes at the Ministry of Education Exhibition and the Japan Art Institute Exhibition. The work is a gift of Frederick and Tina Zwegat.","como_mirarla":"Start with the contrast between the richly patterned black kimono and the soft pink cloud of blossoms behind it. Follow the dark diagonal of the palanquin shafts that anchors the composition. Linger on the closed parasol and the woman’s restrained gaze, a small detail that turns a fashionable outing into a quiet moment of contemplation.","dato_curioso":"The Brocades of Edo series nostalgically celebrated Edo-period elegance during the Meiji modernization, and by 1903 the elaborate palanquin shown was already a historical symbol rather than common transport.","preguntas":["What do you think the closed parasol suggests about this pause to view the blossoms?","How does the luxurious palanquin shape your understanding of the woman’s status and her moment of stillness?","What connection do you see between the short-lived cherry blossoms and the carefully adorned kimono?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cerezos en flor, de la serie Brocados de Edo","se_ve":"En el centro de la estampa, una mujer joven aparece de perfil mirando hacia la izquierda, con el rostro pálido y sereno y los labios apenas entreabiertos. I focus on the materiality of this 1903 woodblock print on pearly cream paper.
