What you would seeLo que verías

An open page of an antique bound book is shown straight on. The thick paper is an aged ivory cream, with the fore-edge of the volume visible on the right. Near the top center there is a small, horizontally elongated relief set into a recessed rectangular frame with a pearly grey background. Inside, four highly stylized white figures with veils or wing-like drapery appear to dance in sequence, like airy, etched traces in low relief. Below, French text is printed in a small, elegant serif type in two justified columns, paginated 19 at the bottom center. To the left of the right column, nestled within the text, a second smaller vertical relief is inset in its own debossed window. It depicts a standing female figure wrapped in long, vaporous veils tinted with pale blue and pearly white. Her hands rest on her head and the gown falls in soft, translucent folds. Raking light emphasizes the embossed paper texture and the subtle volume of the plaster prints.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two white reliefs and how their recessed paper frames make them appear to float. Then focus on the lower figure and notice the watery blue of her veils against the pure white of the upper motif. The contrast between the orderly block of text and the airy, dancing silhouettes reveals a tribute where dance becomes sculpture.

ContextContexto

This is page 19 of a bound volume illustrated with gypsographs by Pierre Roche (French, 1855-1922), published in 1904 in France by Les Cents Bibliophiles to illustrate an essay by art critic Roger Marx. Roche is best known as a sculptor, but he worked prolifically in clay, bronze, marble and plaster. One of his favorite subjects was Loïe Fuller, the American pioneer of modern dance who took Paris by storm in 1892. The book was described at the time as a precious monument to Loïe Fuller. The gypsograph technique uses plaster reliefs printed onto paper. Further details of the edition are not recorded, but the work is held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

The dancer portrayed, Loïe Fuller, became famous for her Serpentine Dance with huge silk veils lit by colored electric lights, and Pierre Roche depicted her in almost every medium from clay to marble.

  1. How does your perception of dance change when it is turned into a still, pale relief?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la danza al verla convertida en un relieve inmóvil y pálido?
  2. What relationship do you see between the lightness of the veils and the weight of the book as an object?¿Qué relación ves entre la ligereza de los velos y la pesadez del libro como objeto?
  3. Why might a sculptor choose a book to honor a dancer?¿Por qué un escultor elegiría un libro para homenajear a una bailarina?

If you look closely, you will notice how delicate this page from 1904 is. The thick paper in ivory cream tone is slightly aged, yet it keeps its strength. I love how the raking light reveals the debossed area of the embossed paper and the subtle volume of the printed plaster. The horizontal relief at the top and the vertical one of the woman with veils are not glued on, they are printed onto the paper. Caring for this gipsography technique is a challenge, because plaster is fragile and such light paper shows every mark.

To me these figures look like constellations in motion. The four white shapes in the horizontal relief seem drawn like shooting stars, with floating veils stretched like comet tails against a pearl grey background. Below, the standing woman with her hands on her head and her translucent dress touched with pale blue looks like a nebula trapped between two columns of French text. It feels like watching a cosmic dance printed on a single open page.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic book! At the top there are four little white ghosts dancing with wings and veils, all sunken into the paper as if someone pressed them in. Down below, in the middle of the tiny French letters, there is a lady with a long soft dress that shines with very light blue. She has her hands on her head as if she is dancing. I like that the paper is creamy colored and feels thick and puffy, like you should touch it very gently.
