What you would seeLo que verías
A tall ceramic vessel with an inverted truncated-conical silhouette, photographed frontally against a soft gradient gray background that fades from dark at the top to light at the base. The body tapers to a small flat foot and widens dramatically toward a broad, undulating and slightly asymmetrical mouth. The surface is divided into two zones: the lower half is densely covered with fine, diagonal cord-impressed patterning, creating a rough, textile-like texture mottled with orange-red firing blush and sooty dark gray-black areas; the upper half is richly decorated with thick applied clay coils forming flowing waves, scrolls and a prominent central spiral. The rim is thickened and wavy, with an undulating lip that rises and falls like a wave crest. At the back, an expressive sculptural handle rises above the rim, pierced by two teardrop openings and topped with an intertwined figure-eight scroll. Soft overhead lighting emphasizes the relief, the porous earthenware, small cracks and the handmade irregularity of the fired clay.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the openwork handle at the top, then follow the wavy band of raised coils around the rim. Notice the contrast between the tight, diagonal cord texture below and the loose, gestural relief above. Look for fire blackening and the asymmetrical rim that reveal it as a well-used everyday object.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this earthenware vessel with impressed and applied designs dates to about 2500 BCE, within Japan's long Jōmon period (c. 10,500–300 BCE). Based on its shape and decoration it was likely made in the northern Kantō region. The term Jōmon, meaning cord-marked, refers to the technique of pressing cord into damp clay, clearly visible in the lower patterning. It is identified as a cooking vessel, with darkening from use over fire. The maker is unknown, as is typical for communal production of the time. For reasons still not fully understood, different regions created highly distinctive styles.

Curious detailDato curioso
The term Jōmon was introduced in 1877 by American zoologist Edward Morse after finding cord-marked sherds at Ōmori, and it came to name an entire era spanning over ten thousand years of Japanese history.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator, this vessel speaks to me of fire and hands. I look at the lower half with its fine diagonal cord markings, mottled with orange-reddish firing stains and dark grayish soot that confirms its use for cooking. Above, the thick applied clay cords form waves and that central spiral that still preserves pores and cracks in the fired clay. The wavy thickened rim and the rear handle pierced with two teardrop-shaped openings remind me that every irregularity is valuable and should not be erased, because it is its history.

I look at this vessel and think of deep time. It dates to around 2500 B.C., from the Jōmon period, an immensely long span of over ten thousand years in Japan. I imagine under the same sky a community in northern Kantō shaping this inverted truncated conical silhouette that widens toward the mouth. The central spiral looks like a galaxy and the two openings in the handle like moons watching over the fire. The soot-blackened clay connects me to an everyday cosmos where cooking was also a way of finding one's place in the universe.

This pot looks to me like a little volcano with a crown. Down below it feels scratchy like with little rope lines and it has orange and black spots as if it got burned while cooking. Up top it has little clay worms making waves and a coiled snail in the middle. The rim is like an ocean wave and it is not even. At the back it has a funny handle with two little teardrop holes and two curls like a number eight. I want to touch it but very carefully because it looks very old and special.
