What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal print in warm sepia and brown inks on cream paper, with a wide margin and a handwritten-style caption below. On the left, occupying almost half the image and rising close to the top edge, is a massive stone castle. Its rough walls show rows of small rectangular windows, buttresses, chimneys with thin curls of smoke, and shadowed crevices in the rock beneath. Near the center stands a tall round tower with a crenellated crown, small turrets, and narrow windows stacked vertically. Below it, at the water's edge, is a lower, flat-roofed stone building, partly reflected in the river, beside a wooden mill-like structure and leaning trees. The river fills the lower middle ground, calm and dark on the left and broken into white foam at a weir on the right. In the right distance, a multi-arched bridge crosses beneath leafy trees and a slender church spire. In the immediate foreground, on a dark, grassy bank, two small figures carry bundles near fallen branches, while another tiny figure bends at the far right. Large, full trees frame the right side, clouds soften the sky, and a few birds cross the pale distance, giving the monumental architecture a quiet, human scale.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bulk of the castle on the left and follow its stone base down to the quiet water. Then move right, across the white rush of the weir, toward the bridge and the open sky. Finally, return to the small figures on the near bank: their everyday labor changes the castle from a monument into part of a lived, working landscape.

Curious detailDato curioso
Paul Sandby helped popularize aquatint in Britain because its granular tone could imitate the washes of a watercolor drawing in a reproducible print.

If you look closely you will see this is not flat ink, it is etching with aquatint in sepia and warm brown tones on cream paper. Those shaded cracks in the rock, the small rectangular windows and the thin smoke from the chimneys were made with acid layers that build texture. I am drawn to the contrast between the dark calm river on the left and the white foam over the weir on the right. The wide margin and the calligraphic title below show it was a print meant to be kept and framed with care.

I love to search for scale, the huge and the tiny living together. On the left the castle fills almost half the image and reaches near the top edge, with its round crenellated tower pointing to the pale sky. In contrast, in the foreground on the dark bank, two figures carry bundles and another crouches, they are just tiny dots. Higher up a few birds cross among soft clouds. It is like the night sky, the monumental architecture is the fixed constellation and those human silhouettes are shooting stars that give proportion and calm to the scene.

It is a giant stone castle! It has lots of tiny little windows and a super tall round tower with little points on top, it looks like from a fairy tale. Below there is a river that on one side looks calm and on the other makes white foam like soap as it falls over a weir. On the bank there are two tiny people carrying bundles and fallen branches, they look so small next to the castle. I like the little arched bridge far away, the big trees and the tiny birds in the sky, everything feels peaceful.
