I am moved by how time has left its mark on this trimmed parchment from around 1415. The gold leaf background with its tooled vegetal motifs is darkened and cracked, and the gothic text in black and red ink below looks very worn. I notice the pigments: the deep blue of the floor and the Virgin’s mantle, the red of the archangel’s cloak and the curtain, the green of the wings and lining. Every stain and loss tells us about its fragility and its history as a loose leaf from a missal.

It looks like the angel and Mary are playing statues, both kneeling face to face. The angel has huge green wings that look like a peacock’s and a red cloak trailing like a superhero cape, and he is pointing with his finger. Mary, with her blue mantle edged in gold, has her hands together as if making a wish. Between them there is a little open book on a lectern and behind there is a little red curtain and a very fancy golden chair. Everything is surrounded by colorful little flowers and vines.
