What you would seeLo que verías
Against a plain, light-beige ground, like a museum mounting cloth, lies an irregular textile fragment, wider than it is tall and frayed at the edges. Its main surface is a worn sandy tone, with loose fibers, holes, and areas where only vertical threads remain like fringe. Several horizontal bands woven with repeated motifs run across it. At the center, a wide band dominates, patterned with a lattice of diamonds and small circles or stylized flowers in muted red, greenish blue, ochre, and dark outlines. Above and below it run narrower borders with ovals, interlaced diamonds, and very schematic plant-like or calligraphic forms that are not always legible. The repetition is not perfect: some motifs shift slightly in color or break off where the weave has been lost. The most visible losses open at the upper left and lower center, exposing the support and making the bands seem to float. The light is even and frontal, without strong shadows; even so, the rough, dry texture of the linen can be distinguished from the decorated areas, which are somewhat denser and faintly raised. From a distance it looks like a horizontal mosaic; up close, it reveals wear, breaks, and the patience of a weave made rhythm by rhythm.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the wide central band and follow its small repeated lattice from left to right. Then look at the losses: they cut across the pattern and reveal how thin what survives really is. Finally, compare the narrow bands above and below; their ovals are similar, but not identical.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a fragment of a tiraz-style textile made in Egypt during the Fatimid period, in the 12th century. Its technique is described as a tabby ground with inwoven tapestry ornament, in linen and silk, and it is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. In general terms, tiraz bands were decorative strips associated with garments and often included inscriptions or inscription-like motifs; in this fragment, no clearly legible text can be confirmed from the image. Its maker and original use are unknown, and it probably formed part of a larger cloth.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual fact is that, despite the large losses, the horizontal bands still keep their alignment, which lets us imagine the rhythm of the complete textile even though much of the ground has disappeared.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What might this fragment have looked like when the textile was complete and in use?¿Cómo pudo verse este fragmento cuando el textil estaba completo y en uso?
- How do the losses change our reading: do they only damage the piece, or also tell its history?¿Qué hacen las pérdidas en nuestra lectura: solo dañan la pieza o también cuentan su historia?
- Why repeat small motifs in bands instead of creating one large central image?¿Por qué repetir motivos pequeños en bandas en lugar de crear una sola imagen central grande?

I pause on what time has made visible. I see a rough, dry linen in a sandy tone, with loose fibers and gaps where only vertical threads remain like fringe. The decorated area is denser, with the slight relief of interwoven tapestry. I notice how the wide central band with diamonds and small flowers in muted red and bluish green still holds its rhythm, while the frayed edges and losses at the upper left and lower center remind us of its fragility. It is a fragment that asks for care and slow reading.

I see this fragment like a horizontal constellation. Against the light beige background, the bands are parallel orbits and the central band with its grid of diamonds and circles looks like a star chart made in red, ochre and bluish green. Each repeated motif is like a star that is not identical to its neighbor, because wear interrupts the sequence. Those gaps where the backing shows through are interstellar voids. From afar it looks like pure order; up close, a universe of variations and human patience woven beat by beat.

It looks like an old little blanket that tore and is now floating. It is wider than it is tall and has little hairs sticking out everywhere. In the middle there is a big stripe with tiny diamonds and red and green flowers like a memory game, and above and below other narrow strips with little ovals and leaves. There are small holes where only single threads show like little combs. I like to search where a little drawing changes color or gets cut off. From far away it looks whole, but up close you see how time has patched it all up.
