linen and silk: plain weave with inwoven tapestry weave

What you would seeLo que verías

A narrow, vertical textile fragment with an irregular, frayed outline, centered against a pale, neutral ground. It reads as a long, tattered ribbon, uneven in width due to loss and wear. In the foreground the weave structure is visible: a linen ground in ivory and golden ochre, overlaid with horizontal tapestry-woven bands in silk in deep madder red, dark navy and soft green. Successive registers appear: stylized Arabic inscription bands in red and black, interlaced guilloche —braided strapwork— borders, and fields with lozenge medallions and small rosettes. Even, diffuse light reveals both matte linen and subtle silk sheen, loose threads, holes and missing areas. Toward the bottom, a broad wine-red band and a fringe of raw, creamy tassels finish the piece; at the top the edge is heavily abraded, with exposed warp threads. The scale suggests a fragment of a ceremonial sleeve or robe inscription band, now fragile and patinated by age.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the fragment from top to bottom along its horizontal bands, noticing how text and ornament alternate. Pause on the rosette medallions and on the contrast between golden ochre and deep red. Look at the lower fringe and the broken threads, traces of fragility and material history.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a tiraz from Fatimid Egypt, dated to the 1100s, made of linen and silk in plain weave with inwoven tapestry weave. Tiraz textiles were inscribed fabrics produced in state-controlled workshops in the Islamic world, often featuring epigraphic bands praising the ruler and geometric motifs such as guilloche. They were used as honorific garments or decorative robe bands. The maker is unknown, as is typical for this workshop production. The piece was purchased through the J. H. Wade Fund. Its precise archaeological findspot is not recorded, but it was probably preserved by Egypt's arid conditions.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the medieval Islamic world, the word tiraz referred both to the state workshop where inscribed textiles were woven and to the honorific inscription itself on the garment.

From my bench I see both damage and miracle: frayed edges, tiny holes, loose threads, and yet colors that survived. I focus on the ivory linen ground and the silks with their soft shine: the deep wine red, the dark blue, and that very pale green. The guilloche, that braid that seems endless, shows me where the weaver pulled tighter. Below, the raw-tone fringes still hang and remind me this was a sleeve or band someone once wore, not just decoration to look at.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I read the fragment like an ordered sky. The horizontal bands are like parallel orbits and each one repeats its cycle: inscriptions in red and black, guilloche braids crossing like trajectories, and diamond-shaped medallions with rosettes at the center. The golden ochre ground is the field where everything orbits, lit evenly to separate matte and shiny threads. The piece is a vertical ribbon, wider at the bottom where the wine red deepens and ends in fringes, like comet tails lined up at the edge.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a superhero’s old scarf that got a little torn at the edges. It is long and skinny, cookie colored with red, blue and green stripes. It has funny letters that look like little drawings, braided trims that tangle together, and diamonds with tiny flowers inside. I like to touch with my eyes the loose little hairs and the holes, as if they could tell how old it is. At the bottom there is a wine red part with little fringes that seem to dance, and the top looks all frayed as if someone wore it a lot.
