Wool and linen: tapestry weave
What you would seeLo que verías
This irregular, heavily worn textile fragment is shown horizontally against a neutral backing, visually split into two bands. The upper register has a reddish-orange ground bordered by narrow stripes with small abstract motifs in blue and cream; at its center, on a deep burgundy ground, five stylized quadrupeds in yellowed ivory march to the right, perhaps lions or griffins, with raised tails and marked manes. The lower, broader band has a warm brown ground and occupies nearly half the piece; four horsemen in profile ride across it, each on a horse of a different palette — one cream with a blue tail, one off-white, two vivid red, and one dark blue cut off by the edge. The riders wear red and blue tunics and appear to hold lances. The weave is coarse and grainy, with loose threads, frayed edges, fringes and lacunae that reveal centuries of wear; colors look muted and earthy, yet touches of bright red and deep blue still stand out despite fading and missing weft areas, giving the surface a painterly, almost pixelated texture up close.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the contrast between the two bands: the repeated animals above as a frieze, the narrative riders below. Look at the fraying and how each horse, though schematic, has a distinct color and stance. Notice how wear turns the cloth into something like an abstract painting when viewed closely.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a Fragment of a Tunic by an unknown maker, dated to the 400s–600s, from Egypt in the Byzantine period. It is worked in wool and linen in tapestry weave, typical of Coptic textiles of late antiquity. The source provides no further description, so the exact findspot and original garment context are not known, probably an ornamental band from clothing. Such banded compositions with riders and animals are common in eastern Mediterranean textile production of that era.

Curious detailDato curioso
Coptic tapestry weaves in wool on a linen warp often survived burial in Egypt's arid climate, allowing reds and blues to remain legible for more than 1,400 years despite heavy fragmentation.

If you look closely you will see this is not a painting but a fabric woven in wool and linen using tapestry technique, very common in Byzantine Egypt between the 5th and 7th centuries. I notice the thick grainy weave, the frayed edges and loose threads that speak of centuries of wear. On the upper band we can make out five pale animals on a deep wine background, below four riders in red and blue tunics on horses of different colors that still keep their strength.

I like to think of this fragment as a small constellation in two bands. Above, five ivory-colored quadrupeds all walk to the right as if following an orbit on a dark wine background framed by geometric borders in blue and cream. Below, four riders on horseback ride in a line on an earthy brown ground, wearing red and blue tunics with horses in cream, white, red and blue. It is an orderly parade that still seems to move even though the textile is torn and worn.

This little cloth looks super old and frayed but it has lots of horsies! On the top there are five little animals with tails up that look like lions and they all go to the same side. Down below there are four men on horses of different colors, one with a blue tail, another whitish, two red ones and a dark blue one cut by the edge. They wear red and blue clothes and seem to carry spears. I imagine they are racing and they keep going even though the fabric is torn.
