What you would seeLo que verías

Against a plain, almost white gray ground lies a nearly circular fragment of woven wool, its edges frayed and irregular. At the center is a round medallion on a warm reddish-orange field. Facing left in profile, a bird occupies much of the disc: its breast and body are covered in a checkered pattern of small pale yellow and russet squares, like feathers turned into a grid. Its neck is long, upright, and dark green with fine vertical stripes; its head is small, turned slightly, with a barely visible eye and beak. Around and beneath the bird are curling plant forms in faded greens, golds, and pinks, partly lost to wear. The central disc is framed by a deep navy, almost black, wavy band edged in ochre, and outside that runs a ring of alternating red and green triangles on a mustard ground. In several places the weave is thin, torn, or patched by areas of muted pink where threads have disappeared. Loose fibers stick out around the perimeter. The even museum lighting reveals the ribbed texture of the weave and the matte, dry surface of aged wool, small in scale and fragile in appearance.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bird's checkered breast at the center, then follow its dark neck upward to its small head. Next, look at the edges: the wavy dark ring and the ring of triangles show that this is a fragment designed as a complete ornament. The worn patches and loose threads change the reading—they make clear this is not only an image, but a surviving piece of cloth.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is *Roundel Fragment: Speckled-Breasted Bird*, by an unknown maker, dated to about 740–760 and attributed, with a question mark, to 8th-century Egypt. It is a wool tapestry weave, now in the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund. Round medallions like this often decorated garments or household textiles in Egypt during late antiquity and the early medieval period, although it is not known what larger cloth this fragment belonged to, who wore or used it, or where exactly it was found. Its bird and plant motifs belong to a long decorative tradition shared across cultures of the Mediterranean.

Curious detailDato curioso

In tapestry weave the picture is not printed or embroidered afterward: the image is created at the same time as the cloth itself, as the colored weft threads are woven in.

I pause at how fragile this circle is. It is wool woven in tapestry, frayed, thin and torn, with dull pink patches where threads are missing. You can see the wear on the reddish background and on the greens surrounding the bird. I work with what remains, not with what I imagine. This fragment dated around 740–760, tentatively attributed to 8th century Egypt, has no known original garment. I care for it as a matte, dry and ribbed testimony that still endures in the Textiles department.

I see this medallion as a small enclosed system. At the center, on a warm orange-reddish ground, stands the bird in profile facing left, with a pale yellow and reddish checkered chest and a dark green upright neck. Everything is held by a wavy navy band with ochre edges and an outer crown of red and green triangles on mustard. It is a portable cosmos, from late antique Egypt, woven in wool to clothe someone, today a loose and worn fragment.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a broken cookie with a bird inside. The bird is sideways, with a long green neck and a chest like a yellow and red chessboard. It stands on little green, golden and pink plants, but some are gone because the weaving is old and thin. Around it there is a wavy navy border and further out little red and green triangles on mustard yellow. I like that it looks fuzzy, with loose threads sticking out everywhere.
