What you would seeLo que verías
This is a vertical black-and-white print on cream-colored paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular border. In the center, a rustic wooden bridge with uneven posts and horizontal rails crosses a narrow, shadowed ravine. Below it, a stream flows toward the viewer over flat stones and between grassy banks. On the left side of the bridge stand two women in long dresses; one wears a light apron and a cap and seems to be speaking, while the other, smaller in scale, listens turned toward her. The foreground is filled with loose rocks, irregular stone walls, broad-leafed plants, and tufts of grass drawn with dense, scratchy lines. To the left, part of a stone building shows a small doorway and a tiled roof; to the right, another wall and a cottage with a chimney frame the scene. Rising behind the bridge is a steep, pale hillside covered with shrubs. At the top stands a thatched cottage with two chimneys, small windows, and a tiny figure beside a wooden fence. Other thatched roofs descend to the right. The light is even and bright, with no visible sun, and contrast comes from hatching and dark vegetation. The whole image feels hand-drawn, rough, and close at hand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the stream at the bottom and follow it under the bridge toward the two women. Then look up the hill to the solitary cottage and compare its quiet height with the closeness of the houses at the sides. Notice the rough fence posts and the laundry of lines in the thatch: that disorder is what makes the place feel lived in.
ContextContexto
This print, dated 1821, belongs to A Series of Ancient Buildings and Rural Cottages in the North of England, by British artist Samuel Prout (1783–1852), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a softground etching in the Prints department, credited as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur D. Prescott in memory of Margery Irish. The title identifies the place only as Runswick, in northern England; it probably refers to the coastal village in Yorkshire now known as Runswick Bay, although the source record does not specify this. Prout was known for architectural and rural subjects, a focus clearly reflected here.
Según el Cleveland Museum of Art, esta estampa de 1821 forma parte de A Series of Ancient Buildings and Rural Cottages in the North of England, del artista británico Samuel Prout (1783–1852).

Curious detailDato curioso
Softground etching uses a soft, waxy ground: when a drawing is pressed through paper laid over the plate, the line produced can imitate the grainy, broken texture of chalk or pencil, an effect visible in the foliage and stonework.

I focus on how this image is made: it is a softground etching on cream paper from 1821, and you can see it in the rough, close linework. The wooden bridge with uneven posts, the stream between flat stones, and the vegetation drawn with dense, scraped lines all reveal the artist's hand. I notice the even light with no visible sun and the thin linear frame holding everything together. As a conservator, I think about the care of the paper and how the hatching creates contrast between the shadowed ravine and the pale hillside in the background.

Even though this is a daytime scene with no visible sun, it makes me think about observation. The light is even and bright, like a cloudy morning, and it reveals every detail: the irregular stone walls, the thatched roofs with chimneys, and the steep, pale hillside. I love how the print invites patient looking, just like watching the sky. Every line is data. The little house above with its small windows and the tiny figure by the wooden fence feels like a distant point you only notice if you stop and focus.

I like the little wooden bridge because it looks like it might wobble if you walk across it. Down below the stream runs between stones and grass and I can imagine the sound of the water. There are two women chatting, one with a light apron and a cap, and up on the hill there is a house with a thatched roof and two chimneys. I also see loose rocks and big-leaf plants in the front. Everything is in black and white but it feels calm, like a small village where everyone knows each other and goes out for walks.
